i have verison 9, have dled every possible update, every codec pack and everything related to it that i thought might have helped from microsoft. it opens and all but when i try to use it to view a video or a vido clip on a website such as a video game clip or something and i open the file with wmp it says error dling codec. i don't know what this means. any website that uses clips in wmp does this as well is manuelly opening up wmp and trying to do it.
well sorry about the first post for some reason after i typed the heading i hit enter instead of tab but here is my problem. my windows media player no longer plays video. It also seems to cause problems with my other players. I have downloaded 3 episodes of the simpsons. none work, 1 i used direct connect over my network to get from a friend and his works fine on his wmp but on mine it gives some error with codec or something. it also then causes quick time to not function as well. In webpages sites that have video clips or anything involving wmp also does not function including audio and video. I have run mulitple virus programs and spyware programs but nothing works. any ideas? Also how can i unistall it, in the control panel all it does is remove access from the start menu not actually remove it.
Could you please describe in some more detail what you mean by 'does not function'. Do youn mean that when you click on the shortcut WMP does not open at all, or do you mean that once open there is some function that does not work, if so describe what you are trying to do. Are there any error messages? What version of WMP do you have, have you downloaded updates? whatever info you can give would be useful to help narrow down the problem, and to find a solution.
Your second post must have got there as I typed.

I searched for troubleshoot under WMP in the MS knowledgebase. There are several articles (sorry for long link). Maybe something there will help.

You may not have the required codec, see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;291948&Product=WinMediaXP
In WMP, Tools, options, Player tab, see that 'download codecs automatically' is checked
Whilst connected to the internet, you could also try help menu, check for player updates, and if there are any, download and install them.
There are also some third party plug ins (not free) at
http://windowsmedia.com/9series/personalization/plugins.asp?page=4&lookup=Plugins
Sorry our lines crossed yet again...
