XP Home SP2 to XP Pro?
I am running a new 8600 with Xp Home SP2 and before I get further into it am considering upgrading to XP Pro.
If I
did not do the OS upgrade portion with a Dell CD, would all the features from the Dell factory CDs still work? Service tags, support, all the fuzzy things that you get when you buy what appears to be a nice unit.
Is there a
sound reason to go to XP Pro, other than an itchiness by the owner to fiddle? I do use Pro on other units, having upgraded Home, thinking it was bloated & inefficient.

Hello,
I'm not an ace at this but this is my opinion as a user of about 6 years, also a former Dell customer.
If I were you and did not connect to a LAN and did not run business type Aps. I would stay with XP Home.
The first thing I would do If I bought a new factory made computer (which I never will again) would be to do a clean install of Windows leaving out all of the junk that they preinstall in them. Update the necessary drivers and then install all of my stand alone software.
Reinstalling Windows off a retail or OEM version of Windows purchased else where has nothing to do with Dells preloaded software. If you still want to reclog your computer you can reinstall it off Dells Cd's.
It's a no brainer to tinker with the computer unless you have a reason to do so, and a second computer to fall back on. Why not build one? At least you will have something to show for your effort when done, hopefully.

You can look at a comparison of the two versions here. I install and use both . . and see no difference in performance . . I personally would not pay the higher price for Pro unless I needed the additional functionality . .
