XP Pro SP2 Logon/Logoff Loop
I am facing a logon/ logoff loop @ the XP-Welcome screen for all user types.
Tried to use the recovery console and in the C:/Windows/
System32 root I copied the userinit file: copy userinit.exe wsaudapter.exe
All ok upto this but any way I try to reboot (safemode etc.) I get locked again in the loop.
Tried using recovery console ms-dos to run the regedit.exe file to be able to change the Registry but no access.
Also Format C: to reinstall Windows Xp does not work.
CHKDSK shows no errors on the harddisk.
Anybody has a solution?

My version is XP-Pro SP2.
It has been running one month without problems, I bought it at our local IT store.
This XP2 version was updated after installing via internet without problems.
Bios runs the latest (Dell Dimension 8200 = A09) update without any problem
The problem emerged after a virus scan with Norton and a Spy ware scan with Adaware-SE when the computer was started later for use again.
Found comments and repair procedure on the internet as I mentioned but it does not work due to reboot problems (logon/logoff loop) in all Windows modes.

Try installing User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from Microsoft
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b286e6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&DisplayLang=en
You could also try installing Tweak Ui and setting it to Autologon

I think you misunderstood what I wrote, it's not a matter of upper or lower case, it's the spelling of the two file names I put in bold
copy 'userinit.exe wsaudapter.exe' Did you type this path in ? the correct path is copy 'Userinit.exe to Wsaupdater.exe'

Hi,
It was probably a wrong spelling I used to copy the .exe files.
However I was not able to check this because meanwhile my hard disk has crashed.
It had some errors but I was able to run a recovery a couple of times before, now I could not fix it anymore.
A new hard disk is on it's way so let's say problem solved.
Thank's for your help mate!
