XP reinstall after SP2 won't work, can't slipstream
I apologize but I've searched and some posts come close to my problem, but no cigar.
I've got a 4 yr old Dim 44oo running XP. I want to do a clean install, so I put the disc in, and get a message that the version installed is newer than the one on cd, so I can't go any further. I've reformatted twice in the 4 years I've owned this thing with no problems.
So I do some diggin and come across the slipstream method at both Microsoft and the Elder Geek. So I figure I'll try MS first, because if anybody should know how to do it, they should.........shoud'nt they? Anyway, all went good as far as setting up the folders and dl'ing SP2 and all that. So I work thru it and all loooks good until I get a msg that says not all files were copied from the original XP cd. Then it gave me the option of skipping said files with the warning that some could be system files. I'm not an expert, so that scared me and I backed off.
I read somewhere in these forums that Dell XP re-install discs do not like to be slipstreamed for some reason or another, have you heard this? Like I said my rig is 4 yrs old so I'm assuming any support is over.
If anybody could give me a fresh look at this problem I sure would 'preciate it.
