xp sp2 install
After windows update automatically installs the new update I get this grey bar overlying the task bar. I can't access the task bar. Also, many of the programs stop working. I have repeatedly restored and have been able to salvage the system but now it installed the update again and wipped out all my restore points. I don't know what to do to get rid of the bar and make my system work again.

You could trying doing a repair installation before doing an Upgrade or New installation.
If your Original Window XP CD is SP1 you will need to create another CD that slipstreams SP2 with your original Windows XP CD. The below link explains how to "Slipstream Windows XP SP2 and Creating a bootable CD".

The part in the link that says:
If you get the error:
This is caused by the fact that your Windows XP CD contains updates that will be automatically installed when you run setup. This type of CD's will usually be from larger OEM suppliers (like Dell, HP, or others).
You cannot use this type of CD to create a slipstreamed SP2 install.
is incorrect. You cannot use an automated tool that does not handle non-integrated service packs. You CAN use the manual method as described in this link to create an SP2 slipstreamed CD from the Dell Reinstallation CD.

Hi VBdotNet,
Thanks for clarification. You are correct that the above instructions were wrong about not being able to slipstream DELL OEM restore CDs. I should have pointed this out or found a more accurate post on slipstreaming SP2. The below statement covers what versions of Windows XP can be slipstreamed.
I have a 'DELL Reinstallation CD - Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition including SP1' and I was able to slipstream SP2 using the above procedure, without any errors.
Even thought 'RESTORE CD' and 'REINSTALLATION CD' are sometimes used interchangeable, there is a difference between the two.
Do the instructions you posted cover how to slipstream SP2 with a DELL RESTORE CD by my definition?
Thank you for you post.
