XPHome with Outlook/Outlook Express

Question

Up until now, all the machines I've gotten from Dell have been ordered through the Home or EPP division, and have come with XPHome or MediaCenter Edition.  They were a mix of desktops and Inspiron laptops.  They've all had just Outlook Express as an email tool option.   The last two machines I got were Inspiron 6400s laptops, with XPHome, from the Small Business division.  They came with both Outlook Express and Outlook for email tools.  Is this just because I ordered from the Small Business division?  I thought you Outlook only came with XPPro.  And, is the Outlook on these 6400s just trial versions?   Can Outlook be purchased as a standalone?  That is, can one add it to an XPHome machine (or a Win2000 machine)?  Not that I want to, I'm just curious how one obtains Outlook, and if it's not free, why did it come on the 6400s.  I prefer Outlook Express for home use.  I use Outlook at work, but it's just overkill for my home needs, and more complicated for other family members.   Thanks Message Edited by Blindmelonball on 01-27-200709:41 PM

Outlook Express is part of WinXP.  So no matter what version of WinXP you get, you will get Microsoft Outlook Express.   The full version Outlook is not part of WinXP.  It is part of Microsoft Office Suite.   I suspect that you may have got a trial version or a full version of Office Small Business of which Outlook is a part of.   Outlook can be purchased separately.  HERE is where you can get it by itself.

OK, I just googled and see that one can purchase Outlook as a standalone.  It is not free.   But, I still would like to know why it came with the 6400s, and if it's just a trial version.  I guess I could install it and see, but I hate to install sw that I don't intend to use.   Thanks again

Ah, yes. I just reviewed both order details for the 6400s, and both show "Microsoft Works 8.5 Plus Office Trial, for Inspiron". Also, the Start menus on both have Microsoft Office and Microsoft Works. And, I looked at the site where I ordered the machines. Works is included in the purchase, but the Office Trial is not listed, even though it did come installed.

Practically everyone qualifies for the student version of Office so see of you can find access to that version.
