XPS 8700

The laser mouse in our XPS 8700 (Windows 10) stopped working.  We bought an optical mouse.  When we turned on the machine, we got a blue screen titled RECOVERY, and it said, your PC/Device needs to be repaired. A required device isn't connected or cannot be accessed.  Error Code 0x0000225.

You'll need to use recovery tools.  If you do not have any installation media (Like a disk or USB device) you will need to contact your PC administrator or PC/Device manufacturer.

Press ENTER to try again

Press F1 to enter recovery Environment

Press 8 for Startup Settings

Press Esc for UEFI Firmware settings.

I pushed all said buttons and nothing worked.

I then pressed F12 rapidly and ran a diagnostic test and everything appears to be ok. The new mouse was worked.

I have another desktop computer XPS 8940 with WINDOWS 11 that I am using.

What am I doing wrong and what can I do to make my XPS 8700 operational again?

Hi

Well a good internet search should produce some utube video's, and also a long winded explanation, see below.....

  1. Run Automatic/Startup Repair:

    • Boot from Windows 10 installation media (USB/DVD).

    • Select language preferences and click "Repair your computer."

    • Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

    • Wait for repair to complete and restart.

  2. Repair Boot Sector or Rebuild BCD:

    • Open Command Prompt from Advanced options.

    • Run commands:

      text
      bootrec.exe /FixMbr bootrec.exe /FixBoot bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
    • If rebuilding BCD fails, try:

      text
      bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup c: cd boot attrib bcd -s -h -r ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old bootrec /RebuildBcd
    • Restart PC.

  3. Mark Partition as Active:

    • Open Command Prompt, run diskpart.

    • Sequentially run:

      text
select disk 1 select partition 1 active exit
    • Usually mark the System Reserved Partition (100MB) active, or C: drive if no System Reserved Partition.

    • Restart PC.

  4. Restore MBR:

    • In Command Prompt:

      text
      bootsect /ntfs60 C:
    • Restart PC.

  5. Run CHKDSK and SFC:

    • In Command Prompt:

      text
      sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows chkdsk c: /r
    • Replace c: with your Windows drive letter.

    • Restart PC.

  6. Repair Install Windows:

    • As a last resort, perform a repair installation (in-place upgrade) of Windows 10, which keeps user data intact but re-installs system files.

These methods address the common causes for the 0x0000225 error by fixing corrupted boot files and marking the correct partition active. If none of these work, a clean install might be needed.

This guidance is based on established repair procedures for the 0x0000225 boot error in Windows 10.

So perhaps do some research before committing to a course of action.

If in doubt please ask.
