XPS One 2710 (Mid 2012) and Windows 10

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me please if the "XPS One 2710 (Mid 2012)" is under investigation at dell for supporting windows 10. I have read in other posts that unofficial upgrades/install do work fine. Will DELL ever support the "XPS One 2710 (Mid 2012)" with Windows 10. If so, when ???

Regards,

Stephan

Unfortunetly the 2710 is not on the list and as such probably will not be supported officially.

Sorry for cross-posting: I can only voice my support to everyone that have posted the same request. Hopefully, if all owners of the XPS 2710 speak out, Dell will rethink their decision. I was really surprised that Dell apparantly have abandoned the XPS 2710 already, sine it must be considered an expensive high-end produkt and since Win 8 was so flawed. This really makes me reconsider to choose Dell in the future. For the courtesy of your existing customers, Dell, at least provide us with the technical reasons why the 2720 got approved while the 2710 did not!

I totally concur. I bought my XPS AIO 2710 system only 2 years ago and already it is not supported. I will also not be buying another DELL product if this is not fixed. It is very poor showing on the part of such a big company. I guess individual private users are not their bread and butter...!!!

Well so far it seems Dell is non-responsive. Well I am not - I have already replaced one of my Dell machines with Lenovo and the second Dell is also replaced (Apple - don't ask) and if this XPS One 2710 issue isn't addressed this third one will be the last of the Dell machines and it will be someone other than a Dell replacing it!!!!

You will find the same thing with Apple and Lenovo, HP and others.  Have you tried to get the drivers from the chipset makers themselves?

I have been fan of Dell computers for a long time, but I believe I have bought my last one from them.  To spend a couple thousand dollars on a computer and have it be obsolete in 2-3 years is unbelievable.  My daughter owns an Apple macbook pro and after four years it still upgrades to the latest OS.

Very poor though the response is from Dell, I suppose we might also ask why Microsoft has made their desirable new upgrade so finicky in failing to work with some current firmware. They too seem to be failing their customers.

Same for me

I like my XPS ONE 2710 but i dislike the Dell support.

No update to Windows 10 and also if there is some problem i have negative experience.

I already ordered a Surface Book and if Dell do no update to windows 10 then i will use my 2710 as 27 inch Monitor.

A pity for such as expensive nice device to lead in used as a monitor.

I suggest you do not upgrade to Windows 10 on the Dell XPS 2710.  After several boots, the system will no longer start up.  No screen, no CD access, no way to  boot from a USB boot drive.  The only response are 4 beeps which indicate a motherboard issue.  The machine is just out of a two year warranty.  I now have a $1,900 brick.   Very diappointed in Dell.

Unfortunately the post above is true!!!!  I had a three year extended warranty and Dell have now replaced the motherboard twice to "fix" the problem with Windows 10.  Do not put Windows 10 anywhere near your Dell One!!

The engineer who came to replace the motherboard, memory AND hard drive told me that he had now seen 20 Dell One XPS PCs completely broken - and Windows Update in Windows 10 was the cause. I didn't believe him - how could running an update "fry" the motherboard?  But in fact it WAS immediately after the reboot after Windows update that the machine completely died and the motherboard had to be replaced. Twice!

Here's my story.

After installing Windows 10 automatic updates are the new norm. When the machine rebooted it went into a loop of "WPF violation" and "Inaccessible boot drive". Some have suggested that this is to do with Windows update trashing the SSD because of some Intel "go faster" technology.  The only way out is to unplug the power lead.  The trouble is when you then plug the power in you get nothing other than  brief "grey" flash of the screen. No Dell logo. No BIOS access. Nothing other than the relatively silent whir of the fan.

When this happened the first time Dell came on site and replaced the motherboard under my extended warranty.  The machine booted into Windows but gave the same "Inaccessible boot device"/"WPF Violation" error blue screen of death that went into a loop. Then, just as before, after the power was disconnected it was dead for good - no Dell logo, no BIOS access.

A second engineer came on site and said everything else on the PC tested fine so it would have to be repaired by Dell themselves (on site engineers are subcontractors). For "next day on site support" this turned out to be a nightmare. I had to wait 4 days for an empty box to be shipped from Germany. Then I had to wait again for UPS to come and collect the PC after I'd phoned them.  I was told that Dell would run extensive diagnostics on the box to determine what the real problem was. So it was very disappointing over 2 weeks later to just have the PC returned with a slip of paper saying the motherboard had been replaced (again!)

I think you can guess what happened next. I powered it up. It booted into Windows 10 fine and the world was good. Then Windows Update ran and had a load of new updates requiring a reboot.  The machine rebooted and then went into a loop with the error "WPF Violation".  Just like the time before I unplugged the power supply and then plugged it back in again and the PC was back to its "dead other than the fan whirring" state.

An engineer came out again and he was the one who told me that WIndows Update was definitely the cause and if I had to have Windows 10 on the PC (I need Windows 10 as I'm a developer and that's our base platform) then to disconnect the PC from the internet and never run Windows Update.  That's impractical and unrealistic so I've resigned myself to never being able to run anything other than Windows 8.1 on this oversized piece of junk.  I say "piece of junk" because this is by far the worst PC I've ever owned, and has been from day one (when it was delivered with a BIOS error that required talk through on the phone to change settings to get the basic Windows install to work).  I know it's only an i5 processor but having to wait 40 seconds after you click on Windows Explorer or 2 minutes for an internet site to show (when you're running 150MB broadband) on a PC that has very little software installed on it is ridiculous.

I'm advising everyone I know to steer well clear of the Dell XPS One. It may look pretty (the screen IS beautiful) but it's a nightmare of a PC, and this latest Windows 10 fiasco is just the last straw.

This is the scariest report I have ever read. My one 2710 is working with Windows 10 after I updated video and sound drivers. But for how long? I believe it is essential for Dell to make a public response to this report, either to debunk it as a malicious hoax or to explain how their 'high end' machine is unable to cope with a new Windows version. If there is a failure in the machine, the least Dell can do is to reassure their customers that they will receive support, even if the machine is out of warranty, as this is a clear case of a product unfit for purpose. On the other hand, if it true that Windows 10 is frying computers, then it is Microsoft who are guilty of selling a product 'unfit for purpose'. Either way, it is not the paying customer who should suffer the loss!

I agree it's scary and have to admit I was sceptical when the engineer told me - but it did tie up with my experience.

The Twitter DellCare account have been steering though all the issue when I tweeted a mini rant about "next day on site support equating to four weeks without a PC", and have generally been excellent in taking ownership of the issues and making things happen, but I thought it was interesting when I passed on what the engineer had told me they made no comment at all.

I really want to get Windows 10 installed on this PC, but after two replacement motherboards with the exact same systems straight after Windows Update ran I'm inclined to believe the engineer and not risk it. I've had no desktop PC for several weeks now (still waiting for WIndows 8 OEM CD so I can get it up and running again) and really can't afford to be without one for another few weeks, especially since my extended warranty has JUST finished and Windows 10 is not officially supported anyway (although that doesn't stop Dell software nagging you that it's noticed you've upgraded to Windows 10 and need to run their backup software, or that any Check compatibility tests from Microsoft you run indicate the upgrade will run fine).

It's not scary at all, just had the same experience. Windows 10 ran fne for a few months (at least the upgrade from 8.1 to 10), then blue screen where it complained about an intel rapid storage driver which got updated overnight. A few attempts with Windows recovery ended with the only option  to perfrom a clean install for Windows 10. It booted once with a clean version and got bricked at the next boot. No way to access anything, screen blinks and fan turns...

Dell kindly replaced the motherboard and reinstalled the original image with win8.1...

I am sticking the win8.1 for this machine, but this is my first and last Dell...  ( I am very happy with the support, but am shocked that I can brick the MB with OS upgrade) I think it is really unacceptable that I cannot upgrade the OS to win 10 from a machine designed and certified for win 8!

Windows actually states that my PC is compatible with Windows 10, unfortuneatly I have learned the hard way that it is not.

As of today, my 2710 is still working with Windows 10, but Dell's  - and Microsoft's - public silence on this crucial compatibility issue is unacceptable. Come to think of it, are Apple any better? When they have a serious problem, they take the route of public denial until sheer weight of numbers causes them to act responsibly!

Even after the 3 replacements this has caused (and shipment to Germany) the Twitter DellCares account told me I'd be safe to install Windows 10. I suggested they come read this thread and reminded them that their own subcontracted engineer specifically said he'd seen it happen on over 20 PCs.  They then suggested I "wait a few days" as "Windows 10 is being updated all the time" (what the *** difference would that make if the machine is fried before you get to the update that fixes the issue?)

Honestly, they seem surprisingly clueless given what this must be costing them given some of us have extended warranties (mine has expired which is why I now consider myself stuck on 8.1 with no chance of an upgrade)
