VNC is only used for Home editions of Windows. RDP is used for all the others as it is superior in performance and features. RDP will only allow one connection at a time, hence why you are getting logged off.

If you want to "mirror" your desktop then you can install TightVNC from http://www.tightvnc.com/.

there must be a way around this limitation. i would like the functionality of rdp yet be able to mirror it.

No it's not possible to mirror over RDP at this time.
