Hey Techdirect,

To address the issue where a thin client automatically unlocks without prompting for credentials when connecting to a desktop shortcut from the Citrix session, the following steps can be taken to resolve the issue. This behavior suggests that the Citrix session may be configured incorrectly, or the client system isn't enforcing the correct security policies.

Solution Steps:

1. Review Citrix Workspace/Receiver Settings

The behavior you described could be happening because of the Citrix Workspace/Receiver settings on the client machine. Specifically, Citrix may not be enforcing login prompts for reconnection when the thin client is locked.

  • Disable auto-reconnect: In Citrix Workspace, ensure that auto-reconnect is not enabled. You may need to review the settings in the Citrix receiver configuration or group policy. Auto-reconnect can allow the client to reconnect to the session without asking for credentials.

    Steps to check this:

    • Open the Citrix Workspace app.

    • Go to Advanced Preferences > Session > Reconnection settings.

    • Disable the Auto Reconnect feature.

2. Configure Session Timeout and Lock Settings

Citrix sessions can be configured to ensure that after a certain period of inactivity or when the session is locked, reconnection requires re-authentication.

  • Configure Session Timeout: Set a timeout policy for user sessions so that if a session is locked or idle, it will disconnect, requiring the user to log in again.

This can be done in the Citrix Delivery Controller or Citrix Studio:

    • Navigate to Citrix Studio > Policies.

    • Create or modify a policy that requires Session Timeout or Idle Timeout after a specified time of inactivity.

  • Set Session Lock Behavior: You can enforce that when a session is locked, it will prompt for a password upon reconnect.

3. Check Thin Client Settings

Thin clients like those running on Linux, Wyse, or other hardware devices may also have specific settings that affect the Citrix session behavior.

  • Review the thin client’s security settings to ensure that it does not allow auto-login or bypass of the Citrix credentials prompt.

  • Ensure the thin client is configured to lock the Citrix session upon disconnection, ensuring the credentials are required when reconnecting.

4. Enforce Credential Prompt via Group Policy (if applicable)

In environments where group policies are applied, ensure that a policy is in place to enforce the login prompt for Citrix sessions, even when the thin client is locked.

  • You can apply this through Group Policy Management by setting a policy that disables single sign-on (SSO) or forces a password prompt each time a session is reconnected.

    Example GPO settings:

    • Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Citrix Components > Session.

    • Set Prompt for credentials for session reconnections.

5. Review Citrix Receiver/Workspace Version and Patches

Sometimes, a specific version of Citrix Workspace or Receiver can have bugs related to session locking and authentication.

  • Update Citrix Workspace to the latest version.

  • Check Citrix’s documentation or forums for any patches related to session lock/unlock behavior.

6. Disable Seamless Mode (if applicable)

If you are using seamless mode, it may be bypassing the Citrix login screen and allowing the desktop to open without prompting for credentials.

  • Disable seamless mode in the Citrix Receiver or Workspace settings:

    • In Citrix Studio, check the Seamless Session setting under Policies.

    • Consider using the Full Desktop mode instead of Seamless mode.
