Yes, it will work.

For now, connect only the 2-channel (stereo) analog audio cable. Those ports/cables are often green colored.

Yes, signal power is fine because it’s just a low “line level output” , and normally  requires amplification anyway.

Thx, but i believe the central advice in your message is: 'for now'.

I had that idea also. With an adapter there is no real stereo sound (only mono so far) AND the volume level is extremely low (seems unamplified).

Also in your example would be no use for all the other speakers of the 5650 system.

My question aimed for using the old 5650 5.1. system completely on the newer XPS 8700 machine.

Meaning: every speaker is used and connected (center, 2x front, 2x rear and also the subwoofer).
The XPS 8700 computer features all of the affordable output sockets. They are also color coded in the same fashion. Plus the XPS 8700 also has a grey colored socket for 7.1 Sound (side speakers, which i don't have and don't want to connect).

On the old XPS 8500 machine i could adjust volume with the center device and have a quite good sound level.

My question was, if anyone has experience in re-using the 5650 system on newer XPS 8700 machine and how to come to the same sound output overall (volume & 5.1).

this sound system is not , odd or non standard, it's a wired and powered, 5.1 sound system.

that works on any 5.1 sound card made or (more channels) $6 cost.

so use  real sound card that is 5.1 ch. (that is certified for you unstated OS) best is w10 with w10 cards,

cards are not expensive,

plug it in that card, PCIe and install the driver for w10 and connect the 3x,  3.5mm line cables.

then disable the sound (old)  in the PC .

or buy a USB sound 5.1. for $15

sound options on PC are near infinite now, , endless now, unlike the old says 80s with sound Blasters.

endless, what matters is 2 things, only what you want? (and quality ) and cost.

neither do we know, but you do want to use the old wired speakers, sure you can , I can do it 1000 ways.

5.1 USB DAC are not expensive,  and external can be more quiet lacking all that PC internal case RFI noise.

XPS 8700  (what sound is there>? IDK , as I can put 100s devices there ) but base line sound sure.

it came new with 7.1 channel surround (or the option card ? there, I can't see inside your case or the rear)

Why is  7.1 a problem are the WIndows 10 driver missing ?                                                                                               ,

is there enough power?, no that is not the question line out is NOT POWER< it's line signal levels up to about 100mV that is why your speakers have power plug and AMPLIFIER

If you plug the 3x  3.5 mm cables in correctly it will work if the W10 drivers are not missing.(or obtained from scalper sites, dell.com drivers are what you use here OK?

you could test the speaker system on other PCs to see if it still works 5.1 PCs are not rare at all. in the desktop world not at all. that be first. no? test it? see if its good or bad or AC power plug not plugged in>?

if the speaker set is good, tested

then move it to the new PC, then connect up correctly

then load the drivers to your UNSTATE yet, sound card , PCI sound or onboard sound, I cant guess what  jacks are there,  PCI cards 1000s of models ok? the SW driver needs to match what you have,.

Seems to be alright: thanks for the picture. It is exactly what i found on the back of my sound system. Connecting the speakers with the sub-woofer and center is no problem. The only thing that still bothers me is how to connect to the XPS 8700 machine since it has a 7.1. output on the rear side. The connector cable from the sub-woofer features 3 mini stereo jacks. They are color coded: grey, black and yellow. Remember: This is a 5.1. sound system. The sockets on the 8700 machine do not seem to match. see here: .
