Bios update problem
I have a XPS 8930 and after a BIOS update, although the computer still recognized my SSD main drive, it would no longer boot. After exhausting all options I still had no luck getting it running. I’ve had issues with updates before where the Boot order had changed but this time that wasn’t the issue. I began to suspect that the computer was attempting to boot from the HDD instead of the SSD but I saw no way to choose one drive over the other. So I simply unplugged the HDD and lo and behold it worked. By the way, both drives are OEM so I would not have expected an issue. Anyway, is there a setting to fix this in the BIOS without unplugging the HDD if this happens in the future?

It sounds like the OS may have been installed with RAID enabled and after switching to AHCI it would not boot to Windows. It may be that you will have to reinstall Windows but with the option to keep your files and settings. That can be done using the media creation tool found at MS here (Windows 10 version) or here (Windows 11 version). And don't ask me my opinion about BIOS updates. There is a reason that the major MB manufacturers warn to not update the BIOS unless it cures a specific problem that the computer may be having.

Best guess is that after the BIOS update the settings were reset to default. And if so then the system may be set to RAID instead of AHCI. The boot option should be Windows Boot Manager first but it would appear you have already checked that. Check your BIOS settings for any changes.

That indeed happened however when I switched it back to AHCI it still wouldn’t boot. Instead of locking up I got a message with a QR code to contact Dell because it couldn’t find the drive or OS. I can’t remember exactly what it said but it was all very strange. I had never experienced anything like it before. I could see I still had all my files from the command prompt but it was pretty frustrating because it had been a while since I backed up (my bad) and I was afraid I was going to have to do a reset It’s really aggravating that every time the BIOS updates there’s always something.

I think you are probably right but do you think I still need to do that since it’s working now? After I unplugged the HDD it booted fine and continued to work with the AHCI setting on after I plugged the HDD back in. Or will this be an ongoing issue. Last question, if I disable UEFI Capsule Firmware Updates will that keep windows from automatically updating the BIOS? Do you recommend it?
