Boot from CD/DVD - Aptio BIOS
I want to be able to boot my XPS 8920 from my optical drive. It doesn’t appear as a boot option when I press F12. This knowledge base entry (https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln142679/how-to-enable-boot-from-dvd-option-with-uefi-boot-mode-enabled-windows-10-8-1-8?lang=en) doesn’t help because my BIOS is neither of the ones shown (it’s Aptio). Winging it, I tried adding a new boot device and was able to select my optical drive, but it eventually asked me for a file name and I was stumped. I don’t know what that could be - seems to me that knowing I want to boot from the drive should be enough.
I don’t want to change the normal boot order; I just want the optical drive to appear as an option in F12 so I can select it on the rare occasions that I need to boot from a CD/DVD. Can anyone advise how this is done in the Aptio bios (UEFI boot mode)?

not sure about apito
but , you need to turn off safeboot , this word means , all non HDD0/ssd0 device do not boot.
The bios key on most dells is F2.
go there find safeboot and turn it off,
all PCs with full bore, fully enabled, UEFI do not allow, booting to non normal media.
so turn that off.
there may be more steps but all are in the BIOS.
page 105 in your service manual covers F2. page 110 shows "Secure Boot Control" bingo.

Thanks for the advice. When I go to turn off Secure Boot, I get this warning:
Attention! Changing this setting may prevent your operating system from booting or require a reinstall. Are you sure you want to continue?
This freaks me out a bit. I want to be able to boot from CD if needed (e.g., a rescue disk), but I don’t want to risk trashing my OS to create this option. If I run into any problems, I can always just turn Secure Boot back on (assuming there were no critical system changes in the interim), right? I don’t know how else we’re supposed to use rescue media if the optical drive (or USB) doesn’t appear in the F12 Boot Menu.

secure boot is windows OS secure boot, + uEFI . and signed and locked together.
safeboot is not the same thing, safe means (cd drive is dead for boot and USB , and more)
its all in the BIOS there, give it tray, under safeboot.
"(e.g., a rescue disk?"what does that mean, if your PC is fully UEFI secure boot PC< most boot CD, will fail for many things
not just fail to boot.
tell what this rescue thing is?
the OS will not like you messing with hit using some old utilities, in fact that is why it is secure now.
lots and lots of software like that are no good now.
but you never told what it is EXACTLY yet, try a URL link to IT.
not sure what you wish to rescue, sorry.

Sorry but I don’t see any reference to “safe boot” in my Aptio BIOS. And Dell’s own instructions for adding the optical drive to the boot menu using two other brands of BIOS say to turn off Secure Boot first (https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln142679/how-to-enable-boot-from-dvd-option-with-uefi-boot-mode-enabled-windows-10-8-1-8?lang=en).
My need: I want to replace the 256 GB boot SSD that came with my PC with a larger capacity one. The only way I can do that is to image the existing NVMe SSD to one of my hard drives, physically replace it with the new SSD, and then boot from a “rescue” CD (I’ll be using Macrium Reflect) and write the image to the new SSD, which should be bootable afterward.
Meanwhile I was able to boot from a USB drive to run MemTest86, so I’ll explore doing this via USB instead of CD/DVD – giving up on the latter.
