Studio XPS 7100, and s/pdif
Hi, I'm digitizing old and newer record albums and singles, and ultimately plan to restore audio quality, and output results back out through a D-A converter, and onto R-R tape. My question is if any can state for certain that the s/pdif terminal on the 7100 is digital OUT or digital IN? I'm getting conflicting information via any google searches on Dell's intended functionality of this port on the back of the unit. Any replies appreciated.

The old manual says this about identifying the port -
S/PDIF connector — Connects to
amplifiers of TVs for digital audio through
optical digital cables. This format carries
an audio signal without going through an
analog audio conversion process.

Yup, saw that. Thanks for your input, Mary. What it doesn't state is whether signal is intended to come from an amplifier and into the computer for work like I'm doing now via a USB sound card. Or is it inferring that use of the port is for signal output from computer to amplifier for connection to something like a 5.1 or 7.1 audio system and playback of WAV or MP4 files? It's located closed to the HDMI output port, but that's no guarantee that the s/pdif is also output. I can't test until I get some s/pdif-bnc converter plugs, since my D-A converter is BNC on the digital input side (analog out to the Reel to Reel). Those converters are, unfortunately, on back order.
