Studio XPS 9100, Intel Xeon E5540, not working
I have a Dell XPS 5DN3X motherboard and I'm trying to run my Intel Xeon E5540 on it. It powers on but won't boot. I get no display or anything, just power on fans and HDD's running. I hear these boards are particular about which Xeon will run on them and am wondering if my E5540 is one of the incompatible Xeon. I have a i7-930 if I need it laying around somewhere. I'd like to just use the E5540 to save the trouble of tearing up my bedroom looking for the i7.

The 2010 Studio XPS 9100 was never tested/validated with Xeon CPU. Dell only tested/validated the BIOS and Intel X58 chipset with the following OEM CPU =
HXGV2 Gulftown i7-990X, 3.46GHz, 12MB, B1
1G5M7 Gulftown i7-980X, 3.33GHz, 12MB, B1
152W9 Gulftown i7-970, 3.20GHz, 12MB, B1
MNWGW Bloomfield i7-960, 3.20GHz, 8MB, D0
VRDMW Bloomfield i7-930, 2.80GHz, 8MB, D0
G442M Bloomfield i7-920, 2.66GHz, 8MB, C0
1GKT0 Bloomfield i7-920, 2.66GHz, 8MB, D0

From my research many Xeon processors are acceptable.
For example check here:
https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/Dell-Studio-XPS-9100/107
I just upgraded to X5680 but it doesn't set the frequency correctly, it seems to only allow 2.8Ghz:

Although I did find one that appears to be working:

I own the Studio XPS 9100's predecessor, the Studio XPS 435T/9000, which is also an Intel X58 chipset system and have successfully run several different Xeons in it. I compiled a compatible CPU upgrade list here, which although for the 9000, should also apply to the 9100.
On the 9000, to get the new CPU speed and/or number of cores to be recognized I had to either reboot several times, power cycle several times, reset BIOS to defaults or reset the BIOS CMOS. Not sure which did it as it was some time ago.

Is the 9100's factory CPU cooling sufficient for the 980x or 990x processors?
Thanks!

Earlier, I reported my W3565 only ran at 2.4ghz on XPS-9100 with latest bios, A04. I had failed to reset the CMOS and forgot to delete the previous CPU from the Windows 10 device manager. After I did that I got 3.2ghz Xeon speed.
