XPS 8300, boot drive replacement
XPS 8300 x64 Intel i7-2600, non-uefi
Currently there are 2 one-TB drives that are both 512n in raid 0. [original setup]
One drive is failing and I'd like to replace both hdds with one 2 tb drive [non-raid].
512n drives are nearly obsolete, but I've read that some are having trouble booting with 512e drives on this particular model xps8300.
Which hdd drives are known to be boot-compatible? Must it be a 512 native drive?
Thank you.

512E drives are ALL drives past 2011 larger than 120 GIGS.
wd blue drives are fine.
AVOID WD GREEN DRIVES.

Advanced format drives REQUIRE F6 MASS STORAGE drivers and AHCI setting. Drives larger than 2TB are not supported for booting on non UEFI systems.
Seagate handles this with driver.
Use DiscWizard Extended Capacity Manager Software

Now-days, most use SSD as boot drive (due to speed and reliability vs spinning-platter drives).
Lowest 2 SATA ports are full-speed.
Any reputable-brand SATA-3/600 2.5inch SSD should work fine.

Thank you for your reply.
This month I purchased the 8930 with an SSD drive, Win10Pro.
I'm trying to fix the old Win7 8300 to run as a backup for programs that don't run properly in Win10.
I'd like to purchase a 2tb sata hard drive for the 8300 to keep it compatible with all the programs now installed.
If you could reco a hard drive, I'd much appreciate it.

Thank you speedstep!
I've been going crazy trying to get info on a boot drive replacement.
The more I 'googled' the more I confused myself
WD has 1tb and 2tb UltraStar 512n sata drives ... but they've been on backorder for weeks.
Thank you again, I'll read through all your links and get straight on this issue.
