XPS 8700, 5GHz WiFi problem

5G hz, not 5G, btw, my router is 4G-AC68U....sure, my original have been disabled.

What router do you have? That needs to be a dual wireless one to utilize 5G which is very limited in most areas. Don't believe those ads about 5G. That still has a long way to go. Check with your internet provider to see what's available where you live. Phones are not the same as computers. If the electricity goes out, your phone still works.

Make sure you disabled your original 1703 network card in Device Manager to use the usb adapter. 

@astupidguy  Did you configure the PC to use 5 GHz with your router?

Does the 5 GHz network the phone uses have a different SSID (name) and its own settings? If you click the WiFi icon on the taskbar, it should show you a list of available networks where you can pick the SSID for your 5 GHz network.

When I click that icon my XPS 8930, I see the names of both my 2.4 and 5 GHz networks listed and I can select either one. The first time you try to connect to the 5 GHz network on your PC, you're going to have to enter the pass code for the 5 GHz network.

physically remove the old wifi card and toss into the trash.

USB wifi works fine without needing internal card.

You cant connect to 5GHZ without an 802.11AC router.

Some Providers charge extra to tether your phone via wifi and some dont allow it at all.  It comes out to $100 per hour after you exceed your data cap.  There is no limit to how much they can charge you. Your first bill for $3000 or more in a month will convince you they do this on purpose.

I also have friends who got tricked into using phone for that then were charged "overages" for data which was hundreds of dollars with the kids and everyone snarfing 4g wifi.

1. Open WiFi settings screen in Win 10
2. Click: Manage known networks
3. Click: Add network
4. Enter network name (SSID) for your 5 GHz network
5. Select: Security type (must match how router is set up, probably either WPA2-personal or WPA3-personal)
6. Check: Connect Automatically
7. Check: ...even if not broadcasting  (Optional since your phone sees the 5 GHz SSID so the router is broadcasting)
8. Click Save
9. Reboot

You may also have to open the dongle's own config screen to make sure 5 GHz is enable and also the router's config screen to give permission to the 5 GHz SSID to connect to the USB dongle on 5 GHz.
