XPS 8700, PSU replacement fail

Hi, conveniently I found 2 brand new power supplies (apower AK series 680w & 750w) in my basment. I had the idea to swap the power supply in my XPS 8700 as it was an obvious upgrade from the Dell 470w power supply and I also wanted to upgrade to a more power hungry GPU later on. First time was actually a success, the 680w power supply worked perfectly. After seeing that it worked I decided to unplug and fix the bad cable job that I've done. Upon plugging it in exactly as it was before, the PC wouldn't even power on. Mobo light was Amber and made a small pop noise after every attempt to turn on. Perplexed I tried the other power supply I had found with same results. I was so scared that I had broken my Mobo but after replacing the original power supply, guess what? It worked! So I really don't know what I could have been doing wrong, I would still like to swap it if possible, any advice? Thanks.

I do not like that you hear a popping sound. But the no boot sounds like a cable plugged into the wrong place on the motherboard.

A-power AK units are flaky at best and questionable about their output.  You are lucky you didn't fry everything.

This is a review from amazon.

Died within two weeks

Ran fine, if somewhat hot, under a ~600W load for a week or two. Eventually there was loud click and that was the end of this PSU.  So if you want a cheap, multi-rail power supply which can't handle a ~65% load for even one month, this is the one for you.
