XPS 8900, M.2 socket BF caddy
Hi there,
I'm trying to install an M.2 card in the M.2 socket on the motherboard, but it seems to be occupied by a "bf caddy card". Is it safe to replace this component with an m.2 ssd, or should I find an alternate? As well, I don't know if this is important, but my PCIe slots are taken up at the moment as well, so anything that affects those would have to be taken into account.
Any help is much appreciated!

BF-Caddy Card is just an adapter for the real card. Too bad that cable is obstructing the Model number/name in the pic.
My guess is that it's a baby 32gb SSD (likely used for Intel's old lame caching tech).

I think that is just an adaptor for a shorter, piggyback, less capacity ssd like 32gb and you can remove all of it and replace it with one 2280mm stick.

The SSD in the Caddy is a (Liteon CS1-SP32-11 32gb SSD m.2) Dell P/N 07FM7R
That means the caddy board is Likely a conversion from SATA To PCI-E
If its just an extension then the issue will be that "B" Keyed M2 SSD's are SATA and NON "B" keyed SSD are PCI-E only. They are not interchangeable.
I would ask Chris M about what is or isn't compatible and whether its a SATA slot or PCI-E slot.
B keyed needs to plug into SATA Data cable.

The XPS 8900 Service Manual PDF page 16 shows us two M.2 slots =
#26 = M.2_SLOT1 for WiFi and Bluetooth combo card above the blue PCIe x16 video card slot
#16 = SSD SATA3 M.2 slot right of SATA ports. Keyed for M+B SATA SSD
You could remove that LiteOn 32GB and install any of these SATA3 M.2 M+B SSD in the #16 slot =
