XPS 8910, upgrading, 8/2021

Question

Looking to upgrade my PSU & Graphics card on my XPS 8910 if anyone could help me with the combo.

I know PSU needs to be done in order to upgrade the card, I've had this machine for about 5 years, I am able to do the work myself but I just don't keep up with what's out there. Just looking to run Sims 4 + Expansions and Anno 1800 smoothly with decent graphics.

You have i7-6700, 16Gb ram, but your video card is gt730 way too entry level for serious graphics. Upgrade gpu to GTX 970, 1650/1660 or higher. Psu upgrade depends on gpu. Stock psu is typically 460W.

Minimum requirements for High Settings (1080p, 60 FPS) Anno1800

OS: Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10(64-bit versions only)
Processor: Intel i5 4690k @ 3.5 GHz, AMD Ryzen 5 1500X @ 3.5 GHz
Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4 GB of VRAM) or AMD Radeon R9 290X (4 GB of VRAM)
DirectX: DirectX 11 or DirectX 12

For comparable graphics card, the GPU needs to be able to support Shader Model 5.0 for playing the game with DirectX 11 and Shader Model 5.1 for DirectX 12.

Sim 4 recommended gpu gtx 650.

Your system is fine and if you have INTEL PTT you might even be able to upgrade to windows 11.

Your primary issue is GPU. You need an EVGA RTX 3060 XC 12 GB GDDR6 - 12G-P5-3657-KB

This card works fine with your current PSU.

It's not practical to upgrade a 5 year old model that cannot run Window 11 IMO.

You'll probably want to upgrade to a new computer when Windows 11 comes out early next year.

You might be able to install a better video card without updating the psu. Just choose a card that can run on your current psu. Let the experienced upgraders here advise you.

If you are looking for mid tear GPU like

GTX 1650 RTX 2060 you can use the same PSU. You can run almost anything in FHD smoothly.

Start with very Basic : Like installing a new NVME SSD

Thank you for your input, I do get that it is an older machine. I am actually looking to gather information to weight my options for purchasing new or upgrading current setup. Not a hardcore gamer, as you can see from what I play, so just looking for the cheapest option to get my fix. Thank you also for the info on Windows 11, also something I need to consider.

I agree that a GTX 1650 (currently quite expensive at about USD 300) is a good choice. I don't think that it makes sense to spend more on a five-year old machine. No need to update the PSU for a GTX 1650.

While Windows 11 will not be officially supported on the XPS 8910 I think that it is likely that it will install without any issue as it meets the hard requirements, including TPM 2.0. Time will tell.

I have the same system and ran across this thread. Can you tell me what you ended up going with? I'm finding a MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ventus XS Overclocked Dual-Fan 4GB GDDR5 PCIe 3.0 Graphics Card for around $200ish. Seems like a good price point.
