XPS 8920, BIOS 1.0.14, Front I/O cable failure message

I upgraded the BIOS of my XPS 8920 from version 1.0.11 to version 1.0.14 last night (intermediate versions weren't offered in my country or were removed from Dell's website before I noticed them). After the upgrade, I started receiving the "Alert! Front I/O cable failure" message (code 2000-0716) on boot. I checked the cables, reseated all of them and tested the front panel devices, which are all working fine. The power LED is not blinking neither changed color. I run the diagnostics and no errors were found, which makes me suspect a bug in this BIOS version. Is anyone else having this same problem after this update?

I run into this same problem immediately after upgrading from version 1.0.11 to 1.0.14. I checked all cables, reseating all of them, checked all front panel devices (all working fine) and the message persists. I was able to run the diagnostics just once (no errors found), but after that I can't start the diagnostics again: all I get is that message. After hitting "continue" the computer boots and works fine. From my experience and from other user's reports, it's clearly a bug in this BIOS version.

Hello, Dell, are you listening to us?

Same problem here. I tried to downgrade but unsuccessfull. I have no idea how to fix this issue. Will I have to wait another update to fix this?

Same issue, and unable to downgrade either-- very frustrating. The tech support guy assured me that 'top-level' support people have been appraised of the issue, so probably just a matter of time until they update the update.

Just wanted to add I also had this exact same issue after updating to the new BIOS.  Hopefully they can get this darn thing resolved quickly.

Not recommended to try to downgrade BIOS. You need the fixes that are in the latest version.

Since pressing "continue" allows the PC to boot normally, you should do that until Dell fixes the problem and releases another update.

I know this is annoying, but be patient until the next version is released...

I ran into the issue after updating the BIOS of my XPS8920 today as well. To be honest - I can't understand why the buggy BIOS is still online after three days and so many people reporting the same error here in the forum. I often use wol to start my PC remote and now it's getting stuck at the error screen and doesn't boot up into windows which makes the remote startup useless for me. I hope and expect that Dell is gonna fix this soon.

I had the same problem. Called Dell Tech Support. Got a technician out with a new motherboard. Case solved. Now running BIOS v 1.0.09. And will wait for a new release before upgrading again.

@Community,

Thank you for your feedback on this.

I will work internally to find out if the BIOS team already knows about it. In the mean time, I will try to replicate this on our own 8920 asset.

I'll post back with updates in the future.

@Community,

I was able to replicate the same error on our 8920 asset. I will be passing this to the firmware team and will get back with updates.

Same issue upgrading from 1.0.3 (yes, it was very old).  To all those who posted about not being able to downgrade, thank you, that saved me from wasting time trying that.

One other annoying "feature" related to this BIOS update; when the PC stops at that pre-boot warning message, after a while (not sure how long), the PC will start whaling like a fire alarm siren.  I was none too pleased that I left the computer running to do updates, only to be awoken in the middle of the night thinking my fire alarm batteries need to be changed; only to find out it's the PC trying to tell me about error 0716.

Is there a way to disable this alert "feature"?

Friend of mine in another lab has an XPS 8920.  He said he re-imaged it today, updated BIOS, got same problem except once in the OS he found a yellow bang in device manager.  Anyone else getting that?

He also said he left the system on the internet with Windows Update active and some time later (not sure how long), it was resolved.  Not sure if there's FW or SW coming down WU that addresses this, might go into OS and let WU have its way with you to see if that resolves it.

Thanks Justin

I find it very concerning that you are able to reproduce this error instantly with your 8920 asset. It begs the question, was 1.0.14 checked before release? It's not like it is some quirky obscure error.....it shows itself immediately after rebooting with the new BIOS.

Also, the fault was reported to the "concerned team" several hours before you were aware of it (according to the premium support advisor who is dealing with me). And it is still available now!
