XPS 8920, not recognizing headset?
'Need some help on this one,
I have an XPS8920 that wanted to do some recording/dubbing on. My wireless headset was getting some latency, so I purchased a wired headset (JBL Quantum 100). This is an economy set made for gaming, but should be adequate for my needs (just need to be able to hear, while I record).
However when I plug it in, it does not recognize it as a headset, but only as "headphones", as per the attached picture.
Works perfectly when plugged into my wife's MacBook.
I have checked all the blogs and have not found a solution to this particular issue.
Waves Maxx Audio Pro, is selected as "Headset", still when I plug in I get the image shown.....only headphone option and mic not working.
When I look at the sounds configuration, under "recording", it shows Realtek Audio "not plugged in". Under "playback" it shows Realtek as active under speaker/headphones.
I have removed any/all other recording devices, but still when I plug in the headset, I only see the "headphone" option.
The Realtek driver is version 6.0.1.8142 of 2017.
Not sure if anyone can assist. As I said, all my other headsets are working (I have a Logitech wireless headset and a set of apple airpods that both work fine but have the latency issue associated with RF/Bluetooth).
I checked the specifications for the 8920 and the manual says that the front jack should recognize both headphones and/or headsets.
Any help would be appreciated

XPS8920 spec
the headphone and mic jack are separate ports. it would not recognize a combo headphone/mic jack.

in contrast, XPS 8940 spec
8940 has only one front audio jack. It is a headset port which would detect both the headphone and mic part of headset jack. you can tell that from the small logo too.

that is a good catch. I suspect Dell made a documentation error in XPS 8920 manual. When I look at 8910 and 8930 spec on front audio port, both mention:
3. Headphone port
Connect a pair of headphones or speakers. or
3. Headphone/speaker port
Connect headphones or speakers.
yet in 8920 manual, it says
3. Headphone/speaker port
Connect headphones, a headset (headphone and microphone combo), or speakers.
It would be a bit strange that Dell would actually design 8920 front audio port to be a headset port, different from 8910 and 8930, considering all three models have identical chassis design and share many common oem parts.
in fact, the Dell front panel DP/N H62YC is used in both 8910 and 8920, further supporting that they use same audio port (headphone port + microphone port) without a combo headset port.

I did research this before buying the headset. I noted the small graphic showing only headphones but then checked the manual.
Please see below the excerpt from page nine of the XPS8920 manual where it clearly states that this port should recognize headphones, headset or external speakers.
If this is not correct than Dell have messed up.
I will try to purchase a cheap splitter and see if that works.....but not happy with Dell on this one.

I guess that the caught me with this "error".
I will see how the splitter works, and until then use my wife's apple.

Not sure if I should accept as solution now.
What should be the protocol?
