XPS 8930, freezes for 3-5 seconds

I also have an XPS 8930 purchased on May 1 2019 that is freezing in the same way (mouse pointer and keyboard freezes for 3-5 seconds once every hour or so). There is nothing in the event log. It has done this since it was purchased. I was hoping there would be a software fix by now.

@DellCan

Which version of the Killer network driver did that 9/10/19 package install?

@DellCan

Here are the details I was looking for those two different Killer website driver packages:

The Ethernet drivers remain the same at 9.0.0.49

If you have a Killer Wireless Card, those drivers are updated from 12.0.0.825 to 12.0.0.925

@killernetworking

Please keep in mind the reason killer is mentioned is because it's the only component consistently logging information to the event viewer each time the issue occurs.

But is it symptom or root  of the issue?

Do you have any other suggestions as to how to troubleshoot this issue?

Thanks very much

@John-Jay The Killer Control Center has the Overview page to give users a broad, high level view of their computer’s overall network usage and which types of applications and websites are using bandwidth. Users may adjust the priorities of each type of application, as well as adjust the graphing on this page to match their personal preferences. For a more detailed view, users may go to the “APPS” tab, which delivers an entire new level of intelligence and control.  From this tab, users may monitor each application and website to determine which are monopolizing bandwidth.  In addition, users may adjust the settings on this tab to optimize performance by changing an application’s priority, setting bandwidth limits, or even blocking network access so that low priority traffic doesn’t interfere with your games, multimedia applications or favorite websites.  Users have the complete power on this tab to fine tune their online experience to their exact preferences. So this application provides a lot of control over your network connections, it allows you to see your 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi Connections in the Wi-Fi Analyzer. There are many uses that you can use this software to help better your network usage. This by all means is not required as you have options to do Driver Only, INF Package, or install the Killer Performance Suite and disable the Killer Control Center in my Knowledge-base.

@DellCan @HanoverB You both are correct that is the latest set of drivers for Ethernet (9.0.0.49) and Wireless (12.0.0.925) Let us know if you run into any issues. I will monitor this forum, and my tickets to make sure if you have any issues we get them resolved.

Thank you again for your time,

Nicholas with Killer Networking

@John-Jay @HanoverB

At approximately 11:55am, Sep 26th, as I was typing my reply to HanoverB, I ran into the micro-freeze problem again. I immediately checked and I can confirm that neither the Killer Control Center or the Killer Network Services service were running.

I checked the Win10 Reliability report and I did not see any posts at this time interval.

I checked the Events Report and I didn't see anything either except for these nVidia information posts that appear just before the time that I ran into the micro-freeze:

This is my nVidia driver details in case you need to know:

I also ran a Win10 scan and it reported no errors (as usual):

@DellCan

Are you using the exact same drivers as these on my working machine?

Qualcomm Atheros Killer E2400 Gigabit Ethernet Controller: 9.0.0.49  (Driver only)

Realtek Audio Driver  6.0.1.8205   ( From 6.0.1.8205, A00)

Intel UHD driver  25.20.100.6615  (From 22.20.16.4758, A00)

Wireless Adapter Qualcomm QCA9377 Wireless Adapter: 12.0.0.714   (From A 12.0.0.714,A21)

For the last one do you have the Qualcomm or Qualcomm/Killer Wireless Adapter?  You driver pics not showing up yet.

Also waiting for @rjbards to report back.  He took the plunge and is doing a W10 clean install.

@whoareyou_2009 from my understanding when @rjbards posted that when they had a freeze, they noticed that 297 events logged where MsiInstaller reconfigured various software products like the one below. We were just one of those products that were reconfigured. It showed the following:

"Product Version: 1.7.1042. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Rivet Networks. Reconfiguration success or error status: 0."  (0 at end means success)

Troubleshooting wise I have shown users how to disable the Killer Control Center from start up, and services with the driver being the only thing left. Even with those who disabled the issue continues so far. We have these devices and drivers across many platforms and have not run into this issue. Seems there is something causing these to be reconfigured, an update of some sort. I don't believe this to be a root, but possibly a symptom of what the real issue is. If you have any further questions or concerns with your devices let us know we want to help. Thank you again for your time.

@HanoverB

I have all but the Qualcomm Wi-Fi driver.installed.

I have installed one driver at a time (from your list) to see if any single driver corrected the freezes.

I'll get to Qualcomm in next day or so and let everyone know if that corrected the issue.

Qualcomm Atheros Killer E2400 Gigabit Ethernet Controller

I am using the Sep 10th Killer driver-only from the Killer website as I indicated previously in my previous post above. It is v9.0.0.49, v2.1.3135. This was the one Nicholas from killernetworking recommended.

Realtek Audio driver (6.0.1.8248 ,A07, this is the one from the Dell website)

Intel UHD driver  (25.20.100.6615 ,A02, this is the one from the Dell website)

Wireless Adapter Qualcomm QCA9377 802.11ac Wireless Adapter driver

I believe I am using the drivers loaded from the Killer driver-only v9.0.0.49, v2.1.3135 package recommended by Nicholas from killernetworking.

One other thing to understand, my PC is running Win10, Build 1903, I believe you are running the older Win10 Build 1806 on your working PC's:

Reply to @DellCan

I have the W10 1809 build on both my machines.

@rjbards had the problem with his new machine with a Windows 1809 build, updated to 1903 in the hopes it would fix the freeze issue, it did not.  So likely the freeze issue so isn't solely a Windows 1903 build related issue.

Coming in fresh. Have a March 2019,  9th Gen i7  8930 with Nvidia 2060 graphics and also experiencing the issue.

I was going to try the following

Disable power saving all together (Bios)

Write a logger to track these (Simple write to a file every sec and try to detect if it has stalled)

Disable Nics and run from a USB Nic.

Hopefully that will help with fault finding.

@HanoverB

I ended up doing a Factory Image restore early yesterday afternoon after deciding to take my XPS back completely to ground zero, including Win 10 ver 1809.

When I originally got my XPS system, I was hasty to install every updated driver available at the Dell web site; and did an upgrade to Win 10 1903 as soon as it was available. Was this a good idea? Maybe not...

I am letting the system update itself gradually per Windows 10 Update; not grabbing all updates available from Dell and manually installing them. I am also not loading all my applications and data files onto the hard drive in one massive effort.

So far, I have gone more than 24 hours with no freezes. I am going to wait a full 48 hours before starting to load my software applications and data. The following software/drivers are now currently in use:
