XPS 8930, HP USB-C dock G5

Hi All,

I have an XPS 8930 and two monitors and I started a job where I work from home. My work laptop works with HP USB-C dock G5 but my XPS 8930 desktop won't? Anyway to get it to work so I don't have to unplug my monitors all the time?

Docking station is designed to work w laptop and not desktop.

If you mean to connect multiple monitors to both work laptop HP and personal desktop Dell, and u want to switch back n forth the two pc sharing same monitors without need to unplug monitor cables, one method I have tried is to connect monitors via hdmi to laptop n via DP to desktop.  Most business latitude laptops I have used from dell use hdmi, so was a business hp laptop.  Most Dell desktops have one or more DP video ports.  If you connect this way (without a docking station), you just switch monitor video source bth hdmi n DP when you switch pcs, without need to unplug video cable.

PS I also connect desktop usb to monitors upstream USB port, and plug usb kb mouse to monitors usb downstream ports.

Lol, Dell already made the D6000 a long time ago.  You can use it for your setup and just change ONE cable to switch from desktop to laptop and vice versa.

Actually, you can find other universal (USB) docking stations for less than a hundred USD.  Another option is adding thunderbolt 3 to your XPS and it will work with the HP dock.  If I remember correctly, the 8930 does have option for thunderbolt.  I will have to obtain one to verify.

Thanks Redxps630.  I know this but as more people work from home and have desktop computers and multiple monitors they really should work with both.  I have no room for 2 setups.  IE one for work and one for home.  I did the extra cables but really shouldn't have to.  If your listening DELL set up the driver because I really think that is all that is needed.  If not a docking station that works fully with work laptop and home desktop would be a big seller.

An yes if you do I want a royalty. even .10 cents for each one would work...lol

Thanks your the first to mention it.  At over $200 I'll stick with the cables I already have, I got them working thanks to Redxps630.  Got the microphone working but looks like Ill have to switch it manually to my blue tooth head set as I switch.

Don't you need a TB header on the motherboard to connect the add-in TB card, in addition to plugging it into a slot? There's no TB header shown on the XPS 8930 motherboard.

What about using a KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) switch?

Red beat me to it and provided all the part IDs working with this system.   Dell 555-BEOX card will work with the XPS 8930 without the need of the header cable.  But Dell prices are not feasible for the desire of convenient.

Thanks all.  I went with what I had which was the extra cables and set the monitors to Auto.  For whatever reason my Samsung wont auto switch but its a one cable push button solution that fir into my budget because I had all the necessary cables.  The TB card would have been next but that would have been behind the computer where I have a USB C port on the front,

That is interesting if monitors are set to auto.  In such a setup one may need to make sure laptop and desktop are not sending active video signal at same time to monitors they share. my ASUS monitors have small button to switch among DP, hdmi, VGA.
regarding question on motherboard TB header, it has been validated by user that Dell oem TB3 card (c/w XPS 8930) runs in 8930 without need for a motherboard header.  Dell TB3 card are only c/w a few non business desktop models and all of them have Z370 chipset.  The main platform of Dell TB3 are Optiplex.

It seems Dell has been favoring the optiplex Q chipset mostly for TB driver development.  The only 4 models of non-optiplex Dell that enjoy TB drivers are all Z370 chipset (R7/8/9/XPS8930).  It is possible that after that Dell has decided to ignore the newer Z chipset in terms of TB capabilities.

e.g., Dell has released specific TB driver for these chipsets (Z370, Q270, Q370, Q470, Q570, Q670) in these models

the physical steps of installing TB3 card is provided by Dell.

@Chino de Oro Hello Chino De Oro, I have a dell xps 8930 desktop and a Dell Inspiron 15 3520 Laptop (w/o docking station connector... I didn't now to add it when I ordered the laptop).

I am a bit out of my depth understanding what docking station options I have in the discussions.  I am trying to connect two monitors to these two PCs (laptop and desktop).  Can you advise me or am I supposed to ask in a different way? This is my second posting in ten years so I am not posting savvy.  Thank you.

@AReader2 , both of Dell XPS 8930 and Inspiron 3520 have USB type C ports.  You can use a universal dock with USB-C.  It depends on your region, budget, you can get a used, new dock with Dell brand, example UD-22, or non-Dell brands.

Everything would be connected to the dock and there is a USB-C cable that you connect to whichever the device you want to use.  You can swap the USB-C cable between XPS 8930 and Inspiron 3520 or you can get a simple USB-C switch.
