XPS 8930, memory upgrade from 16GB to 64GB

Hi - I would like to know what current memory is installed on my XPS 8930, I see its 16GB, but not sure it's in one single slot, (Dell says its max 4 x 16GB) if so what should I buy, there are so many possibilities;
DDR4 PC4-21300 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • Ballistix Sport • BLS16G4D26BFSC
DDR4 PC4-21300 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • Ballistix Sport • BLS16G4D26BFSB
DDR4 PC4-21300 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • Ballistix Sport • BLS16G4D26BFSE
DDR4 PC4-21300 • CL=19 • Single Ranked • x8 based • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • 1024Meg x 64 • Crucial • CT2K8G4DFS8266

(found on http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/xps-8930)

Would they all be compatible to whatever is on my system? Description says Installed Memory 16.0GB (15.8 GB Usable) but nothing to confirm its already just in one slot or 2 x 8GB (to determine how many new 16 GB sticks need to be purchased). Is there a Dell site which can provide this directly?

Many thanks in advance.

Mark

CPU-Z and GPU-Z are great free tools. Below are the shots from Area-51 R2 (2014). It has 32 GB DDR4 2133 MHz. Notice how the CPU-Z SPD tab Max Bandwidth states = DDR4-2132 (1066 MHz)

I have this same computer with 16 GB (two slots of 8 GB each). Wondering if I can use the two empty slots for 16 GB each for a total of 48 GB? However, according to the posted Table 2, if doesn’t show that configuration as a possibility?

I have the same computer with 4 slots and two used (8 GB each) for a total of 16 GB. Can I put two 16 GB’s in the remaining 2 slots for a total of 48 GB or is that not an approved configuration?

I would say that 48 GB is not a tested configuration according to Dell's service manual, but not all possible configurations that work are listed in the service manual. According to the post below, someone in this forum confirmed that 48 GB does work. Just make sure the memory you are purchasing is compatible with your system.

You have to do sets of 4 so 64 gig = 4 x 16 gig DIMM

https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/xps-8930/CT11062074

You should do matched sets and you CANNOT MIX Rank 1 with Rank 2

I do not believe QUAD RANK is supported.

Speeds and Ranks should match.  Mixing vendors is not recommended.

DDR4 PC4-21300 • CL=19 • Dual Ranked • x8 based • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V •

Mine came with the same configuration, but I only needed to upgrade it to 32gb.  I bought Crucial memory and it worked perfectly in the other two slots.

That’s what I did for my XPS 8930, thanks for the tip.

I was curious about RAM speeds and what is compatible with the 8930. I know the reported max RAM frequency for an i5 8400 on this motherboard is limited to 2666mhz, however, crucial sells RAM on their website that supports the 8930 at 3200mhz. Why would they sell this RAM at this speed if the 8930 will just downgrade it to 2666mhz? I might test this out and download the intel extreme tuning utility to see if I can get the frequency at 3200mhz. Has anyone else bought 3200mhz RAM from crucial?

Crucial compatibility guarantees that the memory they recommend will work in your machine at the specs your machine is capable of, not at the speed their memory can be capable of.

Before paying extra for DDR4-3200 you may want to look at this analysis: https://techbuyersguru.com/gaming-ddr4-memory-2133-vs-26663200mhz-8gb-vs-16gb?page=0 , it shows that while there is an improvement it is hardly noticeable.

64gb is a ton of memory and I doubt if many people can actually benefit from it.
