XPS 8930, Need Help

I have had this PC for about 2ish years. The only thing I’ve ever done with it is add in a graphics card. Very recently it has been preforming awfully. It got to the point where using google chrome took 15 minutes to look up anything. File explorer took a whopping 25 minutes to open. There are some loose wires in here that have been unused since I got it. The labels on the wires are P3-P6. I’ve never built a pc so I’m kindve clueless here. Any and all help is appreciated

Need more info:

  1. What is exact PC model number?
  2. Version of Windows?
  3. Version of BIOS?
  4. Install any new software recently?
  5. Is your boot drive a HDD or SSD, and how much free space is on it?
  6. How much RAM in this system?
  7. Have you tried disconnecting all external hardware except mouse and keyboard?
  8. Have you run the diagnostics by rebooting, tapping  F12 at the Dell splash screen to open the menu, and selecting the Diagnostics option?  Be sure to run all RAM and full drive tests, and copy error messages, if any.
  9. Have you scanned thoroughly for malware recently? Malwarebytes (free) is a good tool for this.

The cable I am seeing is SATA power for an SSD/HDD. Since you do not appear to have additional drives it would be normally laying loose. To offer a diagnosis it would help if you post the exact model number, how much RAM you have, and what type and size of drive such as SSD or HDD. Also the operating system.

My pc recently has almost stopped functioning. I stupidly updated it to Windows 11. The pc was not running well so I later started the download for Windows 10. After this I woke up and no display would pop up. The pc turns on, (fans run) but there is no display. The power button flashes orange twice about every second. I do believe this is telling me how to troubleshoot it but I just need some more guidelines.

Always include exact PC model in your posts.

Without that it's hard to know exactly what the 2 flash code means on your PC.

Didn’t mean for these posts to seem as a double-post. I had a different issue now then I previously did. Before my PC was slow but was fortunately turning on. My new post has been after I tried to redownload windows 10 to fix the issue. Ultimately I have now not been able to get any display on my dell xps 8930 and have now received 2 flashing led’s about every second. Sorry for the double-post

Don't double-post the same question.

1. PC has now stopped displaying anything after I attempted to go back to windows 10. Pc turns on (fans turn on) light flashes orange twice about every second. Not sure if there’s a way to find model number without going through pc settings.

2. Windows was reverting back to windows 10. I had to redownload it, I was past the 10 day opening of going to windows 11. Went to bed and woke up to no display.
3. Not sure how to find this without being in windows.

4. Windows 11 was kindve the end of me. Once I updated it everything ran a bit slower, just kept getting worse. I wonder if it’s a power supply issue, or maybe just my motherboard just died. Bluetooth stopped working on my pc about 2 weeks before I updated to windows 11.

5. 1TB 7200 rpm SATA HDD

6. 2x8GB sticks of ram

7. Yes

8. Can’t do this with no display popping up anymore

9. Scanned for malware pre-shutdown of my pc and came back as clean.

please let me know if there’s more information I can give you. I don’t know a lot about building/fixing Pc’s but I have been attempting to fix it. Thank you!

XPS 8930, 2 amber blinks = No memory or RAM detected.

Try clearing BIOS:

  1. Power off, unplug
  2. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  3. Open case and remove motherboard battery (see Service Manual for details)
  4. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  5. Remove/re-seat both RAM modules in their slots (2nd and 4th slots, counting from CPU)
Make sure their retention clips get locked.
  6. Reinstall battery (Time for a fresh CR2032 3-volt coin cell battery? ~$2)
  7. Close up and connect mouse, monitor and keyboard
  8. Reboot

I am hoping the problem is the motherboard battery. I did all of the steps above and just tried taking out the battery and reinstalling it since I didn’t have time to go buy one today. I will be getting one tomorrow and installing that, hopefully fixing the issue. Still has the 2 flashing amber LED.

I don't think we ever got the make/model, but if it's not very new ... my guess would be failing HDD or Windows corruption.

Not sure how you went from slow to dead. You will have to get computer Posting (showing BIOS again) before you can get much further. If you can get BIOS Posting again, run ePSA Diagnostics.

The picture looks like a precision 3640. The standard HDD is also in the picture.

Installed a new battery + did all the other steps and still two amber lights. Not sure if my motherboard has just gone bad or what.

@SpaceFlare  -

  1. Power off, unplug
  2. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  3. Remove motherboard battery
  4. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  5. Remove all RAM modules
  6. Re-seat add-in video card in its slot, assuming you have an add-in video card and check PCI-e power connection to the card, if the card uses a PCI-e power connector.
  7. Reinstall battery
  8. Connect mouse+keyboard to USB2, monitor to video card (or Intel Graphics if no add-in card)
  9. Power PC on.

You should hear 2 or 4 beeps from the PC. If no beeps, suspect the motherboard...

If it beeps, repeat steps 1-4. At #5, install one RAM module in 2nd slot from CPU. Repeat 7-9. Whether it boots or not, repeat 1-4, at #5, swap a different RAM module into 2nd slot and repeat 7-9. Test all modules in 2nd slot to see if you can ID a bum RAM module.

If PC boots with any RAM module in 2nd slot from CPU, install a module that matches the one in slot 2, in the 4th slot from CPU. And go through the cycles again, testing RAM modules and slots to see if you can ID a bum slot.

If it still won't boot and gives the same blink code, remove add-in video card, at #6 and put RAM only in 2nd slot from CPU. Connect mouse+keyboard to USB and monitor to onboard video port. If it boots now, suspect the video card.
