XPS 8940, adding Sata ssd drive for storage
Looking to add 1 to 2 tb sata ssd drive for extra storage on my computer. Any recommendations?

What are you looking for in terms of recommendations? Type, size, vendor?
Today, I'd say all vendors are the basically the same.
First, make sure you have the cabling for data and power, usually tucked into the cabling for the installed drive. Depending on size, if not 3.5 inch make sure you have a caddy... not sure if 2 are in the 8940 though, but there should be one.
SSD's can get to be EXPENSIVE compared to a mechanical drive. A 2TB would be over $200.
If it is NOT going to be used for some 'critical' needs, that is fast read/write for compiler's, DLL's and OS files, a mechanical will work fine.
I have 3 internal drives, the 2 marked RED are SSD's, the Boot drive and one specifically for MS Flight Sim so it can load needed files fast.
Even have one External drive (USB) for System Back-ups via Acronis True Image (speed is not that important.
Again, unless you need the speed, get mechanical drives, cheaper and larger capacity.
Just my thoughts on this. Wife's Dell Tower Pro has a similar setup as well.

No, you do not need speed for either of those.
I have video's on my External drive and they play fine. FPS is way less than the disk speed, and for video's they tend to be sequentially placed.
Editing, no need for speed. You'll spend a majority of time editing, not playing full video's. Reading the video in and editing it and writing back does not require high SSD read/write speeds.
One other thing I've done. I have a USB drive on my Router, USB 3.0. That connects to the router and I rip DVD's to it. That way I didn't need a DVD player to be connected to all the PC's, mobile devices, and Smart TV's if I want to watch a movie...
Everything connects wirelessly. Slowest connection in some cases even.
Also, to view Netflix movies, only a 10Mbps connection (Internet) is required.
SSD's cost way more and you'll gain no advantage.
