XPS 8940, freezing often
XPS 8940
My XPS 8940 running Windows 11 Pro has started freezing often. When this happens, I am unable to use my mouse or restart the computer. I have to do a force shutdown and then restart. This started after I installed a recommended update to an Intel driver after running SupportAssist.
I am using the computer at this time, but I never know when it will freeze and I have to start all over with a force shutdown.

I believe I have solved my problem. I found this post on the Microsoft site and followed it. I downloaded and installed an earlier driver and so far, I haven't had any problems.

Being limited to an older nVidia driver is really not a solution but I understand if you can actually use your PC again reliably. :)

I am running:
Dell XPS8940
Microsoft Windows 11 Pro Version 23H2 Build: 22631.3085
BIOS: 2.16.0
NVIDIA: 551.23 (Installed Driver Only without NVIDIA Experience)
NVIDIA 3D Settings: Prefer Maximum Performance
INTEL UHD Graphics 750: 31.0.101.5186
I also went into the startup and disabled all unnecessary items.
So far, my system has been running for the past couple of months without any issues.

I also have the same problem with dell xps 8940 with Nvidia GTX 1660 super, freezing since about Feb 1st. It randomly freezes sometimes (rarely) after a few minutes, most often after 5 hours when I don't use the pc. Everything i try to solve the problem takes a long time to see if it works. I unplugged everything USB, doesn't help. Yesterday on Feb 5 i updated Windows to the last version 23H2 , updated everything, drivers from Intel, from Dell, i also removed my Logitech webcam drivers....
Keeps freezing.
Help needed 🥺

Update : i tried many other things, removed all peripherals, tested and it was freezing again. Then i saw on the previous posts that we can set the Nvidia 3D power settings to Maximum Performance. This is the only one setting i changed. It seems to work, there is no freezing again for about 24 hours. Keeping an eye on it!

@Daniel Henault I found this fix in a different thread and it also worked for me. No freezing for weeks. Have updated to the latest BIOS version (after downgrading months ago for troubleshooting) and all is still good. I'll be updating my Nvidia drivers to the latest soon and will make sure the "Max. Perf." setting is retained.

@ispalten Thanks for the tip about the 3D settings in the Nvidia control panel. This appears to have worked for me; I have not had a system freeze in over a month now. For reference, this is what it looks like on my Windows 11 machine:
Details:
GeForce RTX 3060
Nvidia driver version: 30.0.14.7212

Glad it worked, doesn't seem to for everyone.
Each model of the Nvidia cards might have different default value for power, mine is Optimal (RTX 2060) and others are Adaptive... there might even be more... might make a difference if the Max. Power works or not?
