XPS 8950, wdf01000.sys causing severe latency

I have been dealing with severe latency issues (probably with Wdf01000.sys) on this rather new Dell computer.

Somebody help me or I want to return this computer. I have been dealing with this for months. It is killing my business.

latencymon reports the following:

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
CONCLUSION
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Your system appears to be having trouble handling real-time audio and other tasks. You are likely to experience buffer underruns appearing as drop outs, clicks or pops. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Check for BIOS updates.
LatencyMon has been analyzing your system for 0:15:42 (h:mm:ss) on all processors.

MEASURED INTERRUPT TO USER PROCESS LATENCIES
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The interrupt to process latency reflects the measured interval that a usermode process needed to respond to a hardware request from the moment the interrupt service routine started execution. This includes the scheduling and execution of a DPC routine, the signaling of an event and the waking up of a usermode thread from an idle wait state in response to that event.

Highest measured interrupt to process latency (µs): 4431.70
Average measured interrupt to process latency (µs): 5.277287

Highest measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs): 1092.80
Average measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs): 1.73730

REPORTED HARD PAGEFAULTS
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hard pagefaults are events that get triggered by making use of virtual memory that is not resident in RAM but backed by a memory mapped file on disk. The process of resolving the hard pagefault requires reading in the memory from disk while the process is interrupted and blocked from execution.

NOTE: some processes were hit by hard pagefaults. If these were programs producing audio, they are likely to interrupt the audio stream resulting in dropouts, clicks and pops. Check the Processes tab to see which programs were hit.

Process with highest pagefault count: svchost.exe

Total number of hard pagefaults 6766
Hard pagefault count of hardest hit process: 1734
Number of processes hit: 55

What shows in Reliability History Report?

Google says wdf01000.sys errors might be a bad driver. Have you installed any questionable drivers or tried to install any devices that require drivers?

I found something helping a lot, but it's not enough:

- disabling Intel Management and Security Application Local Management Service

This really helps a lot. What is the counterpart of permanently uninstalling Intel Management Engine Components? Maybe I can even uninstal more of those Intel applications?

Then, I went a bit further:

- disabling the onboard soundcard
- disabling the onboard Lan + Wan card
- disabling the Bluetooth card
- disabling the 3 Intel Proset/wireless services

All this came by chance and trials. Maybe we can find a pattern, find a cause, and go further without having to use a disable computer and continuously turn on and off features?

I also disabled several other audio drivers that were not RME.

I have never seen wevtsvc.dll before. It shows in the last few days an enormous amount of "successful application reconfiguration" on programs or apps that I have not used in months.

Does this from msinfo32.exe help?

I know several gamers have remarked that moving the nvidia 3000 series videos card to a different slot which will reduce its capabilities solves the problem I am having. That is not an option for me. I do a large amount of Adobe work which requires this videos card.

Adrian, thank you for offering help. I have disabled many things on this computer. I have disabled the onboard Lan + Wan card and the Killer Ethernet controller, even at the same times. I have not disabled Bluetooth, since I am using it. Five months ago I was not running into this problem. Also, I have uninstalled the nvidia video adapter and tried several versions. I have temporarily disabled Norton.

Now, I don't know about the Intel Proset/wireless services. Am I missing something? What about all these Wan miniports I have listed under Network Adapters?

I use an RME UCX II digital audio interface and have disabled all ADAT and SPDIF inputs and outputs.

I have a Del KB7221W keyboard and mouse that seem to use USB and Bluetooth. AM I wrong about this?

I am certain I have disabled or removed many other items like Dell Peripheral Manager. I appreciate any help you can offer.

1. This website says it's part of Windows.

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/wevtsvc.dll-25743.html

2. Like wdf01000.sys , it's part of Windows. Looks like Windows is getting slowed-down so much, it can tell it can't operate properly and it's trying to let you know.

3. No, Keep your Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti in it's proper slot. Clean-Install the latest WHQL driver from nvidia.com. There is no slow-down or Latency problems with Nvidia 3000-series cards or drivers. If you don't game (and are that worried about it) you can alternatively install the latest Studio-Driver.

I have recently helped some Dell customers here on the forum with various Latency issues. It always comes down to one thing ... Either Dell has pre-loaded some flakey software (or heavy drivers suites) or the owner has installed some software and/or drivers (after they got computer) that is using-up too many CPU cycles.

Would you be open to thoroughly erasing the C-Drive and clean-installing Windows? Not Dell's, but Microsoft's from here:

https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

You install to a blank C-Drive SSD, to it's "un-partitioned space". If you want to try it, I can provide you with some more detailed directions.

I have spent the past day doing all you wrote about. Unfortunately, nothing worked. I installed the latest firmware and then made 2 changes. I disabled both Intel SpeedStep and Intel Speed Shift.

I did not think I was able to do this from many people. I have been using ThrottleStop 9.5 for the past week and thought it was preventing the CPUs from reducing power. After 14 minutes, LatencyMon has not reported an issue. This is a first for me.

Please let me know if I am doing something dangerous to my computer. I did buy this computer to be fast. I have a bad feeling that it will all go south now that it is working,

1. Not sure what that means. You clean-installed Windows ?

2. Yes, if you are having problems with a computer ... you can try flashing your firmware (up to the current version) ... as it might help it to run better.

3. No, I've never had to do that... but some owners have had success with that, especially on laptops.

4. No, I've never had to do that... but some owners have had success with that, especially on laptops. Glad to hear it is working better for you.

5. As I understand what Throttle-Stop does ... it should be fine. As long as it stays cool-enough and you keep it plugged-in to AC-Adapter (to compensate for the additional power-draw).

1. No, I did not clean install Windows.

3. Disabling Intel SpeedStep and Intel Speed Shift made the greatest improvement in latency.

4. Not really sure ThrottleStop worked. Maybe a little.

5. This is a desktop computer.

1. Too bad.

3. Good

4. Interesting. Your message was worded otherwise.

5. That is fine, but you DID post in the laptop-forum, by-the-way.

While it's normally the laptops that sometimes unintentionally run in low-power modes, a desktop can also. Normally, you can just change Windows Power-Profile to High-Performance, etc ... to minimize or eliminate low-power modes ... without resorting to BIOS changes or using Throttle-Stop.

Glad to hear you got it figured out.

I am still having problems. They went away for 20 minutes and came back. Sometimes it takes 2 minutes to create a problem and sometimes 10 minutes. I have changed every configuration I can think of in the Nvidia app and everything to prevent CPU throttling.

Is there anybody that can help me. It is causing me massive headaches.

Well, what can I say? I have had 4 Dell tech support people unable to solve my problem. They want me to re-install Win 11. I don't think they understand the many weeks of work that will create. I researched doing this. There is no guarantee this will work. I use over 200 plugins in 1 program, alone.

Tech support were a bit arrogant in their attitude. They knew the answers. They didn't. In fact, I spent more than a day re-authorizing software. What really bothers me is that the last tech scheduled a 10 am follow-up last Friday. He was a no-show and nobody has called me back. I have no idea who the guy was or how to contact him. I need my issue elevated. Does anybody know who to do this?

One guy told me I would have to ship my computer to Dell and it would take 7-10 days. Why do I have a service contract if that is what they call service?

Just to let you know. I have the same issue and in a 3 month period, from July 2022 through October 2022, I had multiple remote sessions with Dell, Microsoft, Universal Audio, Focusrite, and even Sweetwater, and  none were able to help me. Dell, changed my mother board and reinstalled windows 11 twice. Then I sent the computer back for a look.  They replaced the graphics card. They sent the computer back to me and still I get the DPC latency crackling and stutter. Their final answer (DELL) was that with todays computers there are so many processes and services  running in the background that they can't promise there will be no DPC latency.   I am at my wits end and am trying to live with it but as you know, it's terrible. So I feel your pain. If you find out a solution please post it so I can try it.  I'm willing to do anything at this point. I have done all the tweaks you see on the internet as well as you tube videos,  still no solution.   I use the computer for music produdction so it's really a thorn in my side.

BradHof, when I read your reply I thought I wrote it, that’s how similar our problems are. I spoke with 7 Dell tech support people including 3 who scheduled follow up appointments. They never showed up.

Dell replaced my motherboard. It didn’t do anything except make life a little more difficult. I write and produce my own music. Several of my sample libraries needed to be reauthorized. I have many Spitfire Audio libraries that had to be reinstalled. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that Dell does not truly understand the issue and has no intention of figuring it out.

I am convinced that my Nvidia 3060ti card is not the complete problem. I uninstalled all possible items in Device Manager (Ethernet, wireless network card, all references to my RME audio interface, nvidia card) and used the onboard display adapter and the Realtek and HD Audio adapter, and also no Realtek and HD Audio. I still had issues, but they were less severe. I removed all external synths and controllers. That didn’t change anything. I also removed several items (I forget which ones) from being scanned by Norton anti-virus. I also disabled Norton over 50 times with no luck.

I don’t remember this problem in the early summer. Besides Win 11 Pro updating, I did my best to figure out what else I updated. The Nvidia software updated almost monthly. I started installing the bare minimum version of each update going back to December of 2021. I found one from somewhere around May 23 of 2022 to not give me glitches when I record or playback. Interestingly, Latencymon still show DPC latencies. I am thinking these are only having a minimum effect on my audio programs. What I don’t like is that there is still a problem and  things may go bad for me tomorrow.

Have you tried earlier versions of your video card software? I never received a reply from Nvidia about my problem. It does seem we are on our own. I also never spoke with a tech support person who knew more than me. That speaks very badly of Dell. I repeatedly asked for a tech manager. Who knows if I ever really spoke with one.

If you ever have anything to add to this please let me know.

Hi, just commenting to add I have had this problem for over a year with an Alienware m15 also with a Focusrite doing audio production. Was on the same journey trying intensely to figure it out with various support people, experts, for months and weeks. Changed IRQ settings and everything else listed tried above. Nothing worked. No one could figure it out. My solution was to never buy Dell again if doing audio production. I don't have this issue with any other laptops. There's just something about the way they build their motherboards/kernels or something.
