XPS One 2710, now obsolete

Your XPS should work fine with Windows 10, although it is not supported by Dell.  If it came with Windows 8.1, the license key in BIOS will be able to activate Windows 10 as well.  You can try Windows 10 and if you don't like it, you can go back to Win 8 and continue to grieve its EOL

1.  Invest into a 30 usd SSD.  Swap it out and keep your current HDD for backup.
2.  Fresh install Windows 10 using a USB created by Windows Creation Tool.
3.  Download and install Intel Chipset Driver, Intel AMT HECI Driver, Dell OSD application. 
4.  Run Windows update to install the rest of drivers.  Use Win 8.1 drivers for any missing driver.

Test run your machine for a day and if you feel happy, reinstall your apps and copy data over from your backup drive with assistance from a HDD dock.

Agreed ... it should mostly work.

I overlay-upgraded my (similar) Inspiron All-In-One 2330 from Windows-8 to Windows-10.

I was glad to see that the TouchScreen still worked. However, I am now limited to on-board Intel-Graphics because (from my notes)

Works fine, but since there are no AMD Switchable Graphics drivers ... you must disable AMD video card. If it becomes Activated again, machine will be very slow to boot (most common symptom)

I think the only change required to get the AMD-drivers to fully work in Windows-10 is for AMD/Microsoft to finally make them compatible with (at least) Windows 8.1.
So, seems you CAN do an in-place (or overlay) Upgrade to Windows-10 ... but never mess with or update graphics drivers.

If your XPS One 2710 only has on-board Intel graphics, there is a good chance that everything will work, provided:
a. Intel supports that particular video-card circuit on Windows-10.
b. TouchScreen drivers still load and work (or you can run without them).
c. You can get the OSD drivers to install and work (or you can run without them).

@davidium  - Sorry, but your XPS 2710 may not work with Win 10, and installing it could permanently brick the motherboard, meaning it won't even work with Win 8.1.

There are lots of threads on this forum about Win 10 installations damaging XPS 2710 motherboards, causing the "black screen of death". Here's one of them, and you can search for the others...

Some users replaced the BIOS CMOS chip but that may be expensive if you can't do it yourself and send it out for repair.

IIRC, Dell used 6 different motherboards in the XPS 2710 and maybe only one version actually worked with Win 10, but it's never been clear exactly which version(s) that was. There's a post somewhere in the XPS Desktop forum by moderator Dell-Chris M that lists the various motherboard versions and which version(s) of Windows they were designed to support.

If you update to Win 10, you do this entirely at your own risk. So back up your files on external media before tempting fate.

IMO, if you're careful, have good anti-malware protection, and a good router firewall, you may be OK for a while with Win 8.1, but just get in the habit of backing up your files on external media (eg, USB HDD) at regular intervals.

 I’m currently in the same situation as you. My XPS One is working perfectly on W8.1 and I would love to move to W10 but I’m very reluctant to do so. I previously bricked my motherboard after upgrading to W10 and Dell installed a new motherboard for me. I’m hoping that somebody has successfully done this with no issues?

@Marko1961​ , if you take a glance on UserBenchmark site, you will see that the XPS One 2710 is working with both Win 10 and Win 11.  The overall benchmark for those systems are good and above average.

@Marko1961  - Be careful!  Not every XPS 2710 motherboard works with Win 10, as you've already found out the hard way, and there were ~6 different versions of the motherboard.

Click Start>Run>msinfo32.exe and click OK. What BaseBoard (motherboard) is listed and what BaseBoard Version is listed?  If it's motherboard 02XMCT, there's a chance it might run Win 10, but that's certainly no guarantee, and it also probably depends on the version of BIOS that's installed too.  You update to Win 10 entirely at your own risk.

Since this PC model has a 3rd Gen Intel CPU, without Secure Boot and TPM options in BIOS setup, you'd have to do a hack to install Win 11, even if it can run Win 10. 

The XPS 2710 is 12+ years old, so is it time to update to a new PC with a 13th Gen CPU and lots more speed and capabilities? And maybe this time, don't get and All-In-One so it will be easier to add and upgrade components. 

@Marko1961​ , after clicking on Win 10 and Win 11, you look at the system configurations on the right side, under OS category, you will see the Windows being run on that machine.  

From the main site, after clicking on my link, you can select any system and look at the OS they used.

The point is, many users have repurposed their machine to use Win 10 and Win 11.  Then these systems were benchmarked, they all have good performance while running Win 10 or 11.

Before any of the XPS One owner response, just pointing out to you that your machine is still capable if you want to and does not have to be trashed just because it's old.

@Chino de Oro​ Thanks for all the exchanges. It seems I might have to bite the bullet although my 2710 is still working perfectly. No way am I going to try moving up to Windows 10 or 11. I tried that when W 10 first came out and it bricked the motherboard, which Dell replaced.

Thanks for all the suggestions/advice guys. I’m in the same situation as Davidium. My pc is working fine so I don’t want to risk bricking it again by installing W10 once more. I note that some people have done so without issue but I don’t want to take the chance….

What are thoughts on possible values for an XPS 2710? I’m considering changing to a Mac, hence my enquiry re running W10 for a potential purchaser.

You could always consider continuing to use them with Win 8.1, as long as you have a good firewall, up-to-date antiviral protection, and back up your files on external media on a frequent basis...

Did either of you check to see which motherboard is installed?  Two XPS 2710 running Win 10/11 on userbenchmark list motherboard 02XMCT, but that's still no guarantee your specific system will run without failure. 

You could look on fleaBay to compare specs and whether the PC is running Win 10 for an idea about XPS 2710 values.

FWIW, one of the XPS 2710 running Win 10 that's offered on fleaBay shows a BIOS screen saying it's an XPS 2710  The Service Tag is also visible and when I ran it, Dell Support identifies the PC as an Inspiron One 2330.  Dell supports Win 10 on the Inspiron One 2330,  so cheaters are at work, and likely over-pricing systems by claiming they're XPS systems, even when they're not...

That's odd... If msinfo32.exe doesn't show the board model, it probably wasn't encoded on the board, so other apps that show the motherboard model won't show it either...

I guess you could open the AIO case and look for a label on the motherboard.  But that won't guarantee it can run Win 10/11 even if you have a 02XMCT motherboard.  So maybe not be worth the effort. 

Only you can decide what to do next, stay with Win 8.1, risk installing Win 10, or...

For anyone interested, yesterday I replaced the bios chip and ssd, and I am running win 10 on my 2710. I have everything except OSD working great. I removed the inner 'heat shield' and it runs cooler.
