2-in-1 2020?
Hello everyone. I currently have an order in for the new xps 13, but I’m going to cancel because I thought the touch screen would function as a tablet. I liked the tent mode and tablet mode features that I have recently found out belong to the 2-in-1 released in 2019. I’m trying to find information on the xps 13 release cycle, but I’m not having any luck. I’m wondering if I should wait to see if Dell releases a newer 2-in-1 later this year. A tech reviewer on YouTube mentioned if Dell does release a newer 2-in-1 it would be July. My current gripe with the 2019 is I really liked the Windows hello IR feature, which it lacks. Does anyone have more knowledge about Dell’s release cycle? Should I wait or is something like the 2-in-1 refreshed every couple of years? TIA

No one outside of Dell's advance planning group will know - but the 7390 2 in 1 is new enough I don't think you'll see a new release this year.
Be sure you realize the 2-in-1 does carry a major downside the non 2 in 1 doesn't: the SSD on the 2-in-1 is not replaceable. It's soldered in - meaning no upgrade (or replacement if it fails, other than to replace the entire system board).
If you go that route be sure you keep regular, off-system backups. Recovering data from systems with integrated SSDs is expensive when it is an option - and it's not in many cases. Just ask owners of the originator of this design -- Apple -- particularly on newer systems that don't allow a connection to a working system to recover data, as is the case with their newer Macbooks.

The fact it is not upgradable is a downside that I’m willing to live with. I’m keeping more and more data on my phone these days rather than my computer. I would simply get a micro SD card to bump storage if I have to or another external HD. Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if it might be too new for a refresh.

The new XPS-13 2-in-1 is right here:
https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/new-xps-13-2-in-1-laptop/spd/xps-13-7390-2-in-1-laptop
Notice the thin bezels (and no Dell logo at bottom of screen).
If you don't like that, Microsoft and others have similar with Active Pen tech. Personally, I think an iPad (and Apple Pencil) are better.
More XPS 15 and 17 models are coming, but COVID-19 has delayed everything.

12:27:41 PM Customer Dan: Hi I'm about to purchase the xps 2-in-1 13 but I see you made some upgrades to the basic 13 at 2020. my question is wether an upgraded new version for 2-in-1 will be released this year as well?
12:28:14 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: Glad you chatted in today, I'd be happy to help you
12:28:29 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: Dan , all the same upgrades have been made to the XPS 13 2-in-1 Laptop
12:28:39 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: it comes with the same Processor , RAM and other components aswell
12:28:54 PM Customer Dan: The keyboard is different
12:29:20 PM Customer Dan: As much as I know. Te butterfly keyboard was on 2019 model of 2 in 1 and the basic
12:29:40 PM Customer Dan: The new 2020 xps has different keyboard
12:29:52 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: The keyboard is also the same
12:30:04 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: The XPS 13 2-in-1 Laptop is also the 2020 version
12:31:07 PM Customer Dan: So in other words you're saying the keyboard on 2020 2-in-1 is no longer butterfly keyboard as it was on 2019. But similar keyboard to basic xps 2020
12:31:39 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: Yes , https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-13-2-in-1-laptop/spd/xps-13-7390-2-in-1-laptop
12:31:44 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: here is the link of the laptop
12:32:05 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: where once you scroll down on the page you will be able to see the clear pictures of the keyboard
12:33:30 PM Customer Dan: Well you're saying that the 2020 xps has same keyboard as 2020 xps 2-in-1 and not like in 2019 model. I donno if the pics can tell that
12:34:02 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: Yes , that is right
12:34:07 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: 2020 xps has same keyboard as 2020 xps 2-in-1
12:34:22 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: The only difference is the 2-in-1 features
12:34:30 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: rest all the componenets and build are the same
12:34:58 PM Customer Dan: Oh ok. Got it. I will get into the link now.
12:35:16 PM Customer Dan: Well
12:35:49 PM Customer Dan: I see that the keyboard is similar to 2019 version with page up and down above arrows right and left. Unlike in 2020 xps
12:35:57 PM Customer Dan: Can you check that?
12:36:48 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-13-laptop/spd/xps-13-9300-laptop
12:36:54 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: here is the link of the regular laptop
12:37:04 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: once you scroll down and check the images and compare it is the same
12:37:31 PM Customer Dan: No it's not the same
12:38:14 PM Customer Dan: Arrows left and right above them the page up and down like 2019 version
12:38:33 PM Customer Dan: In 2020 version only big arrows left and right
12:39:23 PM Customer Dan: Also the 2019 version has butterfly keys. The regular xps 2020 was upgraded and different keyboard. How can I know if it's not the butterfly
12:41:41 PM Agent Hemanth Kumar: Dan , i am from the sales team and i can assure you that the XPS 13 and XPS 13 2-in-1 launched in 2020 comes with the same keyboard

Disregard last post. The technical support I got was not right. Spoke to another agent right after who confirmed the keyboards are different
I am also looking for 2-in-1 version with the new xps upgrades of 2020 and I dont know what to expect
I saw a recent comment in youtube comparison btwn xps 2-1 and xps2020 the commenters were discussing the next parallel upgrade for the 2-1 and one of them wrote he spoke to a dell worker who confirmed they will release an upgrade within 2020. But it's just a comment cant rely on that to be true

I am pretty sure that your suspicion of an XPS 13 2-in-1 being released before the end of the year is correct. This is based on past releases. If you look at the current model you will find reviews for it from late October or November, 2019. Once Intel releases its yearly laptop chips, the XPS 13 2-in-1 (at least in the past) has been the first refreshed. That is followed by the standard XPS 13 (no pen support and no folding back case) in the early months (probably February) of the new year and then the XPS 15 around May.
The 2-in-1 has some lessor specs, usually, such as smaller max SSD (I think that the present systems go up to 500 GB compared to 2T for the standard XPS 13 but I might be wrong. It does of course have a mini-SD card slot which could be used to increase storage capacity). The Displays are different (the 4K option on the standard XPS 13 is 500 nits and higher quality UHD while the XPS 13 2-in-1 is a less bright WLED) and the battery is also a touch larger in the standard XPS.
Another option for you might be the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 + which was just announced. With a keyboard it costs about $800 less than the XPS and weighs 1.3 pounds compared with 3 pounds for the XPS 13 2-in-1. I use Samsung's DEX mode all the time and that is an excellent alternative to Windows 10, IMHO.
Hope that this helps a bit.

I ended up getting the 2 in 1 and I love it. No issues at all and could probably never go back!
