Question

So, a couple days ago, I shut down my 9570 and closed it up for the night. Same thing I do every day: start it up, do some work on it, shut it down when I go to bed. Next morning I hear the fans whirring from my laptop. Loudly. That's never happened before in the seven, maybe eight months I've had this laptop.

So, I open it up to see what it's up to; the screen doesn't turn on. So, for all I know, it's not actually doing anything but running the fans. I move the touchpad to see if that wakes the display. Nope, but curiously, the keyboard backlight comes on. I also notice the power light on my drawing tablet is still lit (Figured I'd share that detail in case it might be a clue). Next I press the power button to see if I get Windows or a boot screen; nothing changes. Screen does not light up at all.

So, I think to myself, maybe the computer's trying to burn off excess power or something? Silly thought, perhaps, but I had to go with my instincts in the heat of the moment. So next, I unplug the AC--thought maybe that would shut the fans off. Nope. Checked the touchpad one more time to make sure. Nothing happens, but this time not even the keyboard backlight comes on. Now I really have no idea what it's doing. My only immediate course of action is to hold the power button until the fans turn off. I hold it for ten seconds, and it eventually all shuts off. It hasn't tried to power itself up since.

What the heck was it doing? Did I just wreck my computer--or, did my computer just wreck itself? I recently read up on something called "static flea power," where disconnecting the battery and holding the power button for a long time is supposed to fix any unusual hardware problems. Could it hurt to try that? If I try to power the computer on now without trying that first, would that be a bad idea? If I'm greeted with a Startup Recovery screen, should I try to roll back to last month or run it with the current state? Does this have anything to do with Fast Startup--like, maybe it glitched up or something?

What's my next best move here?

You can disable Fast Startup as well as remove the battery and hold the power button down to release the flea power.

All right. So, I took the battery out, held the power for at least 30 seconds, plugged the battery cable back in place, and bolted everything back together. Plugged AC back in, got a white charge light for a second, went out, then stayed on. Light went out after an hour, so that's a sign the battery's charging and working as it should. Turned on the computer. Appeared to be booting up, then shut itself off after a second. THEN it started itself back up again. Dell logo appeared, and booted right into Windows 10 like normal. No extra BIOS messages or Windows recovery screens. It's acting as if nothing odd happened. I guess this is what's supposed to happen after you do the flea power procedure?

Anyway, login went smoothly. Turned off Fast Startup. All my software and USB devices are running fine. SupportAssist diagnostics found no issues. Did run into one new oddity, though. Ran Windows Update, and after installing a cumulative update it refused to let me restart because my "device was powered off at the scheduled time"--except that it's been -on- the whole time, not to mention the scheduled time setting was turned off. Probably just a bug in Windows Update, but perhaps it could've been a side effect from this whole issue. Restarting from the start menu worked well enough, though.

Ran Windows Update once more, and it found even more updates. Am now using version 1809.

I'll be keeping the AC unplugged and the lid half open after shutdowns for the next week, in case after everything I've done it still tries to power on again. Thanks for your advice. I think it did the trick. Smiley Happy

I have the exact same problem for over a week. I click 'shut down', but have to hold down the power button until the fan stops, as long as 30 seconds. I've had this laptop less than two months and know nothing about removing the battery. I would appreciate some help. Thanks.
