Dell XPS 13 2020 FN Key mapping

@Luticus  There are several threads with this exact complaint, some of which have grown quite large because the XPS 13 used to have Home/End mapped as Fn+Left/Right, but they changed it to what you have a few generations ago, and despite all the complaints that change has generated over those years from XPS 13 owners, Dell has now implemented this same layout on the XPS 15 9500 and new XPS 17 9700.  Unfortunately there's no way to customize this because the Fn key itself is only seen at a firmware level, not at an OS level (which only sees a scan code resulting from pressing Fn in conjunction with something else), so tools like Autohotkey can't be used for key combinations involving Fn.  Multiple users in the threads I just described have called on Dell to develop a firmware update that would restore the ability to toggle Home/End via Fn+Left/Right in addition to the current method.  Given that Fn+Left/Right currently doesn't do anything on these affected keyboards and that it would be absolutely trivial for Dell to set this up in firmware, there doesn't seem to be downside -- and in fact I would argue it would be a huge win given that this layout issue has prompted some people to return their laptops and others not to buy them at all, purely over this issue -- but thus far Dell has not budged.  Incidentally, some Lenovo keyboards operate in the exact way that owners are asking Dell to operate.  Certain Lenovo keyboards have Home/End along the top row, but they ALSO allow Home/End to be activated by pressing Fn+Left/Right, even though those keys are not marked as such.  (Although Lenovo's keyboards have dedicated Home/End keys on the top row rather than having them as Fn mappings of other keys.)  That makes the case for Dell implementing that design even stronger in my mind.  But given that XPS keyboards used to activate Home/End that way, someone obviously thought that moving those keys to the top row was a good idea (can't imagine why....), so this would be a matter of getting that person to see the error of their ways and sign off on a firmware update to give the people what they want.

Thanks for that very detailed reply, it's very reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who saw this very obvious design flaw, and it is a flaw. The only advantage I could possibly see to having the home/end keys where they are is that it doesn't require a modifier key to be pressed there, as long as you haven't toggled fn + esc anyway. In future designs if they just move home/end back to the arrow keys then they could also make room for more modifier keys on the fkey row too, like next and previous media keys, the lack of which is another obvious flaw.  Whoever designed their keyboard layout really needs to rethink what they are doing.  Would also like it if they got rid of the right control key all-together and just made that key a dedicated menu key.  That's what I did on my ducky shine 7 keyboard and the results are fantastic. Ideally they should just give us a way to customize what the fn key modifies in the bios/uefi somewhere. Seriously that would be a LOT better.
