Dell XPS 13 9310, Display issue after installing update!

Hello,

My Dell XPS 13 9310 with the 11th generation i7 processor, Intel(R) Iris Xe Graphics, and preinstalled Ubuntu 20.04 (Kenel 5.6.0.1022-oem) just arrived yesterday. After installing the suggested updates, I restarted the laptop and it has been restarted with flickering/tearing (horizontal lines) and I cannot see and do anything. Then it goes into GNU GRUB options.
I restored the system into the original configuration and have updated firmware to the last version (Ver. 1.1.1) and after installing the updates, it has still the same issue.

I have tried Ubuntu 18.04 and after installing updates the same issue came back again!

Thanks in advance for your comments!

Hi @Anonymous ,

Windows and Dell are many releases behind with the video driver. Intel (who makes the video hardware in our laptops) released at least 5 newer versions since Dell’s latest release. Important is that er have a fix.

Hi, I dont have detailed info on that. With the M1 version you could run into some issues not being able to run some x86 applications, but better look it with people who know better. If that’s the case, you can still buy one with an intel CPU. All in all, the XPS is not a bad machine, but it is still a big gap between the quality of it and the quality of the MacBook Pro. One good advice: if you decide to go for the Dell, do yourself a favor and buy the 4K display. The FHD kills the premium feeling of the laptop. It has lots of bleading and mediocre black. I regret I took the FHD. Other than that, the HW is fine. The problems we have are all software, in many cases the issue is caused by the Windows OS itself. I expect (actually I’m sure) other Windows machines having the same amount of problems. Br, Attila

Go and buy a 13” MacBook pro with the M1 CPU. Full stop.

Hi,

I could make the same answer as @AttilaZ : go for the new MacBook Pro. I was (I think i'm still) a MacBook Pro user, with the 2015 version and I decide to give a chance and came back to windows.  Now, I'm really thinking about selling this FHD XPS 13 and buy me the MacBook Pro M1.

As it was said before, XPS 13 is not a bad machine but I was a little put off by all the recent software issues. And the lack of help from Dell..

Best,

Hi,

Yes, the biggest problem I had with this PC was the display issue described here. Luckily, it is just a SW problem and I found a fix which seems to work for everyone. You just need to wipe all video drivers and install a new one directly from intel and prevent windows from bringing driver update for the video.

The 2nd issue, less bothering though, is the laggy/stuttering behavior or a bluetooth mouse (Logi MX Anywhere 2S) which is again a SW issue in Windows and people are reporting the same problem, regardless of the notebook manufacturer.

Other than that, I don't have any complaint for the machine. I had no other issue so far. Of course, the fan is noisy when you are pressing the CPU, but that's normal. In such a small casing it's not easy to cool an i7 and stay silent. With normal everyday use, with mild power saving ON, I seldom hear the fan. But hey, I have a 3000 USD Macbook Pro 16", and when the fans rev up it sounds like a helicopter, so I cannot complain about Dell here. BTW, the issues described here apply to both 13 and 15 inch machines. They have the same HW (besides the panel itself of course) and same SW, so same issues.

Really the worst customer service ever. I have to recon though, that getting in touch with the local support team from Germany was a totally different experience. About the latter, I cannot complain.

Cheer,
Attila

Note that the latest Intel display driver does not solve all the problems; the display will still go blank and the computer lockup, requiring a hard reboot. This happens when I leave the computer on for a long time, say day and night for a few days.

Hi @LopezM ,

It didnt happen to me so far. Does the lockup happen while you use the PC or it kind of goes to sleep while left unused and you cannot wake it up?

Presumably the laptop did not go to sleep, since I have sleep set to never (on AC), and this happens when I leave the computer on AC for several hours without using it.

Just wanted to say thankyou @AttilaZ

My XPS 13 arrived a couple of weeks ago, and initially no issues. A few days ago I have the graphical pink/purple/green glitch out, and then a full restart. The odd black screen too. Came across this thread when I searched for the symptoms.

Sure enough Windows (or Dell update) had left me with (or updated to)  the IRIS XE driver 27.20.100.8935 which is well out of date compared to the drivers on Intel's Website.

Followed AttilaZ's post on page 6 and installed the latest version available (9168 now).

Other than the driver looping on restart, until cancelled. No issues now. Hopefully will stay fixed (I've disabled Windows 10 updating drivers too. Just google it for instructions).

Pretty poor of Dell not to be aware of the solution nor to push it to people who are calling them. Also poor of Windows to force push driver updates that are out of date, although I remember there is a certification process to getting your drivers registered with the Windows service, so who knows where the problem really exists.

Otherwise, this laptop has been great. Bought it to replace a much older macbook pro. Couldn't move to a new M1 chip as I need developer VMs for Linux. So the new ARM mac's are basically useless now for me. No worries. Prefer Windows to be genuinely honest.

Just chiming in to say I have the same issue on the same machine, XPS 13 9310. Wanted folks to know this is still happening in March, 2021. Going to try install the Intel drivers like you've suggested. Thanks! And agree that Dell needs to do more to address what is clearly a widespread issue on their flagship model.

March 15: Have the same issue, Intel Xe driver is from March.
Flickering colors happen when the internal screen goes to sleep and is wakened up again.

Flickering happens on internal screen only and not on external.
So I guess some power saving mode has issues.

I didn't disable Panel Self Refresh because this eats up to an hour of battery time which I'm not willing to sacrifice.

Dell: You can do better! This is my third XPS 13 and each model had some sort of driver issues.

March 15, namely 5 months after purchase, problem remains. Support is clueless, they send the boilerplate Level 1 troubleshooting, to no avail. As long as they get their KPIs done, the rest can wait.

The colors of my screen get overly saturated or the light of the panel dims out of nowhere. I already tried every possible procedure posted here, even those that involved deactivating some options in the BIOS (on a $2000 laptop it's a joke).

* Download/Save this Intel UHD graphics driver version 27.20.100.9466 A05 to the Windows desktop
* Uninstall the current Intel UHD graphics driver via Device Manager
* Press Windows key + X
* Open Display Adapters
* Right click Intel HD Graphics
* Click, "Uninstall device"
* Follow the prompts but do not restart
* Close Device Manager
* Run the downloaded driver. Restart when done

All,

The XPS 13 9310 and different model XPS 13 9310 2-in-1 use different drivers!

XPS 13 9310, 27.20.100.9466, A05, 4/12/21, N0K1N

The driver I linked to in my previous reply is ONLY for the XPS 13 9310, not the different model XPS 13 9310 2-in-1. XPS 13 9310 2-in-1 owners should go here to get drivers for their laptop.

Do you have a driver for FHD+ display as well? Or would the UHD driver works?

I got a yellowish tint that I can't seems to fix.
