Likely because it didn't sell in large enough numbers. 17" systems are specialized models -- they just don't sell that well.
Further, most LCD manufacturers have shifted to 16 and 18" panels -- the market for 17" notebooks has essentially started to vanish (and the gaming market, which is the largest one for large format systems, is Alienware -- not XPS -- with Dell, at least).
