Screen Scratches - XPS 15 9510

XPS 15 9510

XPS 15 9510

I ordered my XPS 15 9510 in September 2021. A family member had bought the exact same model, I tried it and I loved the computer both for the look and the specs of the computer. So, I ordered my XPS, and this, the week after I received the XPS from my family member. The computer met my needs: impeccable screen quality, quality speakers, exceptional typing experience. I always take good care of my XPS, I never move it from the house and I make sure to clean it daily to prevent dust or particles from accumulating on my keyboard or screen. However, a few weeks after receiving my computer, while cleaning my XPS, I noticed that the screen had some scratches. I thought maybe I was the cause, but upon closer inspection, I saw that the scratches were the outline of a key on the keyboard. I thought to myself that I was very careful in the way I closed and carried my XPS and that there should not be any scratches. So, I asked my brother-in-law, who had the XPS 15 9510, if he also observed the same thing on his screen and he confirmed that he had exactly the same problem. I decided to contact Dell support to find answers. I sent a message on the chat and called them, but each time they told me that I had the wrong warranty and was accused that it was a mistake on my part, and this was while my warranty was still valid. So now I have an XPS with scratches on it and the warranty I have has expired, and on top of that you blame the design flaw that affects the XPS 15 9510 on your consumer. I understand that wear and tear happens, but after a few weeks of use, it's not supposed to happen to a computer that's worth almost $2000. Repairing the screen only will not solve the problem either and the scratches will reappear in the following weeks, because the real source of the problem is the lack of spaces between the keyboard and the screen, which is a manufacturing defect in all the XPS 15 9510 that you produced. A credit of the purchase price of the computer should be proposed for this precise problem, in order to take another model without manufacturing defects. I will never buy another Dell laptop in the future if an effective solution is not offered. A picture of the scratches on the screen are attached.

If they've offered a replacement screen, take that option.  Then slip a sheet of soft paper towel above the keyboard when you close the system for transport.  That will prevent the keys from contacting the screen.

The downside of slim designs is tight tolerances. If after the repair, you're still unhappy, return the system and purchase a different model (which will by design be bulkier) -- something more like the 15" ThinkPad X1 Extreme.   In exchange for a heavier, bulkier system you get one with much more clearance between the keyboard and screen.

This is not a design defect, it's end user misuse. The keys only contact the screen when weight is place on the top of the lid of the laptop when it's closed, like in a bag or backpack. Every thin and light laptop will have the same issue.

I encourage you to "never buy another Dell laptop in the future if an effective solution is not offered." Your threat is hollow and you find the same issue with other brands.

In response to DockMasochist:
That is not the case.  We had multiple people order this model at the same time and they all had this issue.  This is not one of the company's recommended models and no one out of the over 2,000 employees ever had this issue previously so I wouldn't call it a coincidence but a design flaw in this model.
