I need to run software like a cad, Revit, photoshop, Autodesk impression, max.im going 2 buy a laptop with core 2 duo processor, 3 GB ram-one among from hp pavilion dv2800, dell XPS, dell inspiron.which is better? I've heard horror stories abt service of both hp and dell.which provides better service then?

First - update your system requirements.  Core 2 Duo technology went out somewhere before 2010.

Second, if this is mission-critical for studies,  avoid the Pavilion and Inspiron lines.  These are consumer-grade machines with consumer-level support.  You could find yourself waiting weeks for repair if a system fails.

Start by looking at a minimum of the Latitude line (Dell) or Elite line (HP), AND buy a 3-year Pro-support warranty with whatever you do get.  ALL of your intended applications are demanding, so don't skimp on the hardware.

You're likely looking a price floor of about $1,500 -- if that's too much, seriously consider a desktop system, where you get about twice the performance per dollar as you do with a notebook.

I can't attest for HP but our small engineering company has been having a lot of issues with Dell XPS 2-in-1s. We have ordered 7 brand new computers and 4 of them have had critical errors within the first 3 months of use. Two of them needed fan replacements, two of them needed the motherboards replaced entirely. Getting service isn't hard, but making sure they did everything to get your computer back up and running is.

Here are two examples from these new computers (however we have had similar experience with older computers that we had serviced as well)

-The last computer we had repaired, after the motherboard was replaced, our tech said he was not allowed to install the OS. So we would need to pay our outsourced IT company to do it, or open a brand new ticket with Dell (that would take at least another 2 days before we could service it again).

-One of the computers that needed a fan replacement we needed to send in 3 times for repairs. They replaced the fan but when the computer was returned, it would not even turn on. I sent it back again and the computer turned on and would immediately blue-screen when it got to the log in page AND the touch screen would not work. Finally the third time they serviced it, the computer was actually functional.

Our company is considering switching to HPs because this is not sustainable.

As for running Revit and Autodesk, we use the Dell Precision laptops (we also use OpenStudio and Sketchup on them). I am not sure the quality of the newer versions, but the ones we have are about 4 years old and are still going strong. I've worked with my company for a year now, and during that time, they have not needed service on any of them. These are much bigger machines than the XPS ones though.

I very regret having bought about 7 Dells. Half of them had serious problems. Especially de XPS types

apples and peers. 3 year warranty at Dell, means for Dell a repair time of 2 month by experience!
