XPS 13 9310, overheating, #2
My Dell XPS 13 9310 is also overheating massively and shutting down. It has happened three times while in sleep mode (and it is on a normal wooden desk as all other laptops have always been ). A huge disappointment for a laptop that cost more than $2K. I am not very computer savvy and will not dream of changing BIOS or anything like that by myself. I need someone from Dell to please guide me as to what I must do to solve this. Thank you

I have had the same issue with my 9310 since purchasing it 3 months ago. I have followed dozens of suggested solutions on many forums for this very issue and have spoken to several support agents, but with no success. The only way to entirely prevent the problem is to make sure your computer never goes to sleep by disabling sleep mode altogether. I hope that Dell can figure out a solution to this problem as it seems to affect numerous XPS owners.

Update to the latest BIOS and GPU driver from here and let us know if it helps. Also, read through the FAQ Modern Standby.

Hi,
In your post you say that turning off sleep mode seemed to fix the overheating problem. Is that still true? Has your overheating problem stopped entirely? I ask because I am also having overheating problems.

Maybe someone from Dell could explain to you what a sleep study is and how to read the report.
Start keeping track of the times when you let the system be on it own such as the screen turning off or the length of time for such settings as Sleep and hibernation.
If you want to make a report you could look to for info, open an admin command prompt and type the command below. Make note of where the report is stored and copy the .html version to your desktop and open with a browser.
powercfg /sleepstudy

The active investigation by the XPS platform team is still ongoing.
Settings all should use
Set DPM (Dell Power Manager) to Quiet Mode
* Open the Dell Power Manager software
* Go to Thermal Management
* Select Quiet
Disable Windows Search Index and Protocol if seen
* Click the Windows icon, type Services, click Services app
* Search for Windows Search
* Right click Windows Search
* Click Stop
* Right click Windows Search
* Click Properties
* Change Startup type to Disabled
* Click Apply- OK
* Close the Service app
Workarounds for TESTING only. Do not leave them in this state AFTER testing!
Disable Intel TurboBoost in the BIOS (may not be an option in newer BIOS)
* Plug the external power adapter into the XPS 13 9310
* Restart
* Tap F2
* Open Performance
* Click Intel TurboBoost
* Uncheck, Enable Intel TurboBoost
* Click Apply- Exit
* Retest
Disable "Allow fingerprint reader to sleep" in the Device Manager
* Press Windows Key + X and choose Device Manager from the list
* When Device Manager opens, locate your fingerprint reader. It could be located in Biometric Devices section
* Right click the fingerprint reader and choose Properties
* Navigate to the Power Management tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
* Click OK to save changes

I'm seeing the same issues with overheating and random crashes (XPS 9310 i7 2-in-1, 32GB RAM, 1TB). I've applied all workarounds detailed above which does appear to have improved reliability. This isn't acceptable as a solution for such a premium laptop that I've purchased for the power and portability. Any updates on a permanent solution?

Just want to share that I just have the same experience on my Dell XPS 13 9310. In my case this was the first time it overheated while not actively in used. I left it on my study table (as with my other computer of another brand) while charging and this morning my Dell's keyboard and its rear (bottom surface) were very hot. The computer screen was off and it could not be powered on but its keyboard backlight was on.
Will try the suggestions made in this community board, and see what
