XPS 13 9310 USB C adapter not working

Question

Hi,

I bought a Dell XPS 13 (9310) last month and all was fine. This past Thursday my USB-C adapter port stopped working. My keyboard and mouse were getting power but not working nor was the headphone Jack or HDMI.

I purchased a new one (different and better model) and it seemed to work for a minute or so (except the headphones still). I rebooted and all of a sudden the HDMI no longer works and cannot detect my screen. The headphone Jack still doesn’t work either. Anyone know what the deal with this is?

I bought this one from Amazon. It seems like it’s related to it not having an external power supply and / or it being a USB 3.0 as opposed to USB 3.0 Gen2. It did come with an HDMI adapter but I need a port adapter with HDMI, headphone, and 2 USB to run external keyboard and mouse as I’m trying (unsuccessfully) to use this for music production.

I'm a little confused. What 'USB-C adapter port' are you talking about? The 9310 has two USB-C ports (one on either side, but it sounds to me like you've bought some sort of USB-C hub. The 9310 came with a USB-C to HDMI adapter/dongle. Does that work? What hub did you buy?

These inexpensive hubs will always choke when you ask them to do too much. Ask me how I know

I use one of these cheap hubs to move my mouse and headset from my home office to my office office, but the hub plugs into a WD19TBS dock in either office. You'll need a proper dock as opposed to a hub to do what you want to do reliably. I've never had an inexpensive hub do USB and HDMI without issues.

But you'd be better off with a proper dock. While I only use Dell Docks (attaches to the back of my monitor, has all the ports I need), there are a multitude of inexpensive docks that have good reviews - Plugable for example and don't forget to check eBay for discounts.
