XPS 13 9370 WiFi issues after waking from sleep

Just installed the latest BIOS update on a XPS13 9370. Now after waking from sleep it's not finding any WiFi networks. I have to run Windows diagnostics each time before it will connect to WiFi.

Anyone else experiencing this issue? Any solutions/suggestions?

Hey guys, i just found a work around solution for people that are having issues connecting to the wifi after standby or even starting their laptop up fresh. What was happening with me was i would connect to the wifi but it would say no internet connection. I would then have to disable and re enable the wifi adapter to get the internet connection working again.

What i did was I disabled windows fast startup which is defaulted to turned on with Win10. I did this by;

Right Click on your battery icon on your task bar and select "power options"

select "choose what the power buttons do"

select "change settings that are currently unavailable"

untick "Turn on fast startup"

and then save changes.

So far after every reboot plus every time i've come out of standby mode my wifi will connect with a internet connection. I haven't yet had to do the disable/enable method

See if this works for you guys if your have the same issue as i discribed

Good Luck

@SaltgrassThanks for the reply. There's no setting shown in the power settings regarding whether or not the network is connected during sleep. My 9370 is running Win 10 Home, and I don't know whether that setting was removed in that version. I also went into Device Manager to see if I could change the power setting for the Killer network adapter ("allow the computer to turn off adapter to save power"), but the power tab isn't available.

I haven't kept track of how often the problem occurs, whether on battery or AC. The computer does come out of sleep by hitting the space bar. If it's in hibernation mode, I have to hit the power button to wake it.

I took a look at Event Viewer last night and saw lots of errors pertaining to the Killer Networking Driver suite. The computer wasn't able to locate a configuration file at the specified locations. So I decided to disable all services pertaining to the Killer Network suite. I wasn't able to find any Killer-related tasks in the task scheduler. I haven't seen that same Event Viewer error so far; however, I do see an error related to the Killer network adapter not functioning properly -- even though WiFi is working just fine.

I think I have been told previously the 9370 is a Modern Standby system, as is my 9365.  If so, the setting should be there unless a registry edit was made to change the operation.  The fact you have no power tab for the Killer Wireless card would also seem to indicate it was a Modern Standby system.. If you want to make sure, open a command prompt window and type powercfg /a and check the listing for connected or disconnected network or is Standby (S3) available.

From what I have seen in these forums, the original factory Install of the Killer Wireless software may be flawed.  I you thought it might help, you could remove the Software Suite and the Killer Wireless device and drivers.  Reinstalling with the Dell version or maybe one directly from the Rivet Networks site may help.  Do not set up a network bandwidth in the Control application because it might limit your bandwidth.

I installed a Killer Wireless card on one of my systems to test the device and the Control Suite.  Both installs seem to be running fine.

Be aware, if you have SmartBytes installed, it may present certain other problems regarding sound or bandwidth limitations.

  • there is newer version of Killer drivers available (than those Dell provides) - you may give them a try
  • If you use dongle with ethernet socket - there is in a BIOS option to drop wifi and transfer data through wired network when cable is connected, so faulty dongle might cause a problem by sending misleading info to the Windows - disconnect it
  • you may consider resetting BIOS settings to defaults
  • if only your wifi networks are missing on the list, but you can see any other it might be some conflict with the router (killer networking card is quite problematic **bleep**)
  • if you have any kind of security app running (firewall) - temporary disable it to verify that it is not responsible this issue

I have issues with sleep in general. Most of the time my 9370 does not properly go to sleep or stay asleep when the lid is closed, causing the battery to drain quickly. I installed the latest drivers as well, hoping for a fix, and am now experiencing the disabled wifi issue when the laptop actually does go to sleep. The only solution I've found to re-enable the wifi is to restart the laptop. This makes sleep even more useless than it was before the update.

Do folks which have the 9370 know if it is doing modern standby or not?

I am also experiencing the issue of Wi-Fi not connecting after resuming from sleep mode.

This issue, along with the stuttering after sleep mode and a rattling fan is really taking the shine off an expensive purchase.

When you say you installed the latest Bios and a problem started, I assume you feel the problem is directly related to the Bios upgrade and was not happening prior to that.

Anytime I have network problems, I will uninstall the previous driver and reinstall.  It is not always easy to uninstall the previous version.  If the Dell driver for that device has an uninstall option, try that and then reinstall.  The is a Killer Wireless Rep which hangs on the forum and there is an e-mail address, if you can find it, for them.

If the 9370 is configured for Modern Standby, it does not sleep.  Understanding how that works would be beneficial to you.  Knowing how it brings back the Display might keep you from pressing buttons you do not need to do.

If you want to check for modern standby, there are two ways.  The easiest is to open Settings - System - Power & Sleep and see if there is a Network set of options referring to disconnecting from the network when on battery.

The second way is to open an admin command prompt and type the command below.  It will show if sleep is available.

powercfg /a

I had this issue.

Device Manager -> WiFi Adapter -> Power Manager tab -> uncheck "Allow Windows to turn off this adapter..."

After that I have no more problems with WiFi Killer 1535 adapter.

Yes, I have the same issue, but it will also just cut out at random when the computer is in use as well. There is another post on the forum relating to this, so it clearly seems like a common issue. I contacted support, and they reinstalled the driver. It happened a couple more times, and they reinstalled the driver again. We'll see what happens next...

The Killer wireless cards seem to be inherently buggy. It is a bit of a mystery why Dell and other manufactures keep using them, even after all the issues they've had over the years. However, perhaps more puzzling is that now with XPS 13 the card is soldered onto the motherboard, making it impossible to switch to a more reliable card.

Below is a bit more detailed description of this one problem.

For the end-user, the problem appears to be that the wireless card is no longer functioning after returning from standby. On a closer inspection at the event viewer logs, we can see that the card or driver actually crashes during sleep.

To work around this issue, you have to Disable and Re-enable the network interface. A quicker method is to run the following powershell command, which does the same thing:

Restart-NetAdapter Wi-Fi -Confirm:$false

This can be made into a shortcut and placed in start menu for easy access. Even better, this can be automated in task scheduler by creating an even that triggers on the particular crash event (System / Qcamain10x64 / 5002). Even though the crash happens during standby, the scheduled task will be executed after returning from sleep.

In theory, since the wireless card crashes during connected standby, it might be fixable by disabling connected standby (search google for CSEnable). However, after disabling connected standby, the XPS 13 9370 no longer wakes up from sleep (black screen)

If you are experiencing these problems, instead of doing the workarounds I've just described, I would recommend returning the laptop and seeking another manufacturer instead. You have a flawed product, and it's not your job to fix it.

I have found that it takes two to three minutes before wi-fi is active again. I think this is due to the vidi controller being  powered off during sleep and it need time to re-initialize. You might be able to tell it to not shut the wi-fi down during sleep.

Mine doesn't re-activate at all unless I manually disable and re-enable from Device Manager, and this is after I've updated my BIOS

I've had this issue immediately after purchase. Dell was ZERO help, blaming drivers, bios, etc. when I specifically told them at the beginning of the conversation that I went through all of the obvious troubleshoot steps. Since then there have been updates for the wifi/bluetooth driver on the drivers page, but none of them help (.1844, 4/10/18 is the most recent file I have). I even downloaded the drivers directly from Killer's website, no luck. Dell told me to send in my BRAND NEW LAPTOP TO DEPOT so that they can swap my Killer wifi module for an Intel one, after I told them 3 times that the Killer wifi is SOLDERED ONTO THE BOARD. TL;DR there's no solution for this crapfest of a situation.

FWIW my XPS 15-9560 had similar issues but was resolved via driver update. My XPS 15-9550 also had issues (though different problems) that also came with a Killer wifi card, also solved with BIOS/driver update. I know, I should just stop buying these XPS w/ Killer modules...

I replied earlier to this thread. There was no change after they did a couple of driver updates. They ended up telling me that the wifi card must be defective and I needed to send the computer back for a motherboard replacement (since the card is integrated with the MB). I just sent it back today, and will report back when it returns.  We'll see if they are able to fix it.

Thank you for keeping is updated.

As I'm experiencing the same issue, it would be great to know if the return will resolve anything
