XPS 13-9380, acpi.sys, 25% to 50% cpu usage

I recently bought an XPS 13 9380 with i7, 16G of ram, 500G of storage.

Sometimes the fans are generating huge noises so I checked the Task Manager and found that the System process is taking around 25% to 50% of CPU Usage. I used Process Explorer to check threads in System process and found that acpi.sys is taking really huge CPU Usage. This issue may not happen right after booting up but would happen after some time. I am still not clear about what triggers this issue. I tried to do a full-disk scan using Windows Defender while no virus is found. The Operation System is Win10 Pro.

This issue is seriously affecting battery life and performance on my computer. Does anyone have any idea about how to solve this issue? Might it be caused by bugs in XPS's drivers?

I have had this problem on and off since the 9380 was new in January. It went away for a while after loading some new drivers but came back and now happens about once a day. System process runs at 30% plus or minus a few %. Fixes it for a while by hibernating and restarting or by pulling out power cord. I think this will be my last Dell after having had many of them over the years. Had a number of issues on this one and all other issues sorted but this problem won't go away.

If you start the Thunderbolt Software, do you also have the message : "Application is not in use anymore and ca be safely uninstalled" ?

I have also the Thunderbolt Control Center installed and there everything seems ok

Application version: 1.0.16.0

Controller Driver Version: 1.41.613.0

Thunderbolt Generation: Thunderbolt 3 (15D2)

....

I also experience this issue on my new XPS 13, which is interesting as I just replaced an HP Spectre x360 with the XPS 13, and I had the exact same problem with the HP as well.

I spent months troubleshooting the Spectre and never could figure it out. Since it always seemed to happen when I had my external hard drive connected I just assumed there was something about it the Spectre didn't like.

But when it started happening on the XPS 13 I realized it obviously had to do with something about the computer itself.

I think I may have found the steps to reproduce the issue, though. It seems to be fine after a reboot, but once the system goes into hibernate (not just sleep) and is then woken up, plugging anything into a Thunderbolt port causes the high CPU issue.

I realized that the common component between the Spectre and XPS was the Thunderbolt controller. So, after ensuring that I had applied all updates, firmware, drivers, etc, I disabled the Thunderbolt controller in Device Manager, and the issue has not occurred since.

I don't know if this is the exact cause of the issue that other users are describing, but I thought I would post my experience in case it helps anyone else.

Obviously, if you are using Thunderbolt functionality, this work around won't help, but in my case I don't have any Thunderbolt capable devices, so it's no big loss.

Thanks for your posting Craigory1. I have the 30%+ system process / acpi.sys usage problem.

After seeing your posting, I disabled the Thunderbolt controller and this actually immediately triggered the cpu usage problem. To see if it fixed it, I re-enabled the Thunderbolt controller and it promptly crashed the system (blue screen).

I'm not entirely discouraged by this as possibly it suggests that Thunderbolt may be connected with our cpu usage problem.

Tried again disabling Thunderbolt controller. All good so far - normally get high cpu usage once per day. Intend to post back after a week if still ok,

Well it's a week since I disabled the Thunderbolt Controller. I was previously getting system process running at 30%+ about once a day with a reboot or hibernate required to fix. Since disablling the Thunderbolt Controller, the problem has not occurred. Looking very good so far - fingers crossed.

Nope, after the latest round of Windows updates and Dell updates, the system process / acpi.sys has started running at 30% again, even with Thunderbolt controller disabled. Fixed as usual by hibernating.

Hopefully, that will resolve the issue.

I'm still having this issue with all the latest drivers and BIOS. Only thing that fixes it is a reboot or hibernate. Very frustrating.

keyaertch,

Has your Windows OS updated to the latest version of Windows 10? Reinstall the chipset drivers, reboot and then install the Thunderbolt drivers and the thunderbolt application.

It still happened after updating the thunderbolt driver. Then, I went to "Device Manager" -> "System Devices" -> "Thunder Bolt Controller" -> "Properties" -> "Power Management" and disabled "Allow the computer to turn off this device". It's so far so good now.

Confirming that disabling "allow computer to manage power" on thunderbolt device fixes system usage!

Thank you!
