XPS 13 9380, Running Temperatures

First, please make sure latest Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework driver is installed correctly in device manager. Type Device Manager onto the [Cortana] search box, expand Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework, right click on it, select Properties, Driver and then check driver version. You might have to expand each headings to find the Chipset driver. Also, watch out for any yellow triangle or Unknown listed by any of the drivers. Yellow triangle indicate a problem with the driver.

If Intel driver is correctly installed and there no other problem with any of the drivers:

Dell does not recommend placing portable systems directly on your lap or backpack. Due to reductions in the thickness of modern portable systems and increases in performance, heat transfer can become an issue. Using the portable system on a blanket, pillow, or other type of cloth will cover up the fan and disrupt airflow. This will cause the system to overheat and can cause permanent damage.

Lastly, 

Please keep in mind, when the temperatures rises, the fan become much louder. I believe you should consider purchasing a cooling pad for this nice expensive computer. The cooling pad should help cool down the computer when temperature start getting hot.

Dell have also been in touch and said the temperatures are quite normal.

The fans work ok and keep the device cool, I'm just a bit disappointed that they need to be on as much as they do. I work in a very quiet environment so it is noticable.

In hindsight I think I should have bought a cheaper laptop with better thermal management, as I said my Asus Zenbook hardly every needed to run the fan.

I also notice the same kind of thermal performance on my 9380. Fan is always on and temps are like you say. God forbid I do screensharing on Zoom, though because then the CPU temperatures skyrocket.

By the way can I ask what kind of software do you use to monitor the temperatures?

I'm also seeing the same performance issues. When using Zoom, the fans are just running at full speed. It's quite annoying and, frankly, alarming since it means the Laptop is getting extremely hot for long periods of time, thereby killing the battery life in the long term. 

Has anyone replaced the CPU thermal paste or added any thermal pads/patches in between the heat sink and bottom metal lid?  Did it help? 

I use HWiNFO and the CPU *does* throttle due to heat I presume. Here's been its highest temps for today.  Anything above 90C and HWiNFO automatically shows in red.

Hi,

I just did! Cleaned the old paste (which was all around!!! and cracked) with Noctua NA-SCW1 Cleaning wipes. Than used Noctua NT-H2 thermal paste.

It went down from average of 75 degrees Celsius to about 50 degrees Celsius on average. Really an easy fix.
