XPS 14 9440, remap CoPilot keyboard button?

How do I remap the CoPilot on my new XPS 14 keyboard to make it do something more useful, like a ctrl button?

Hi all,

Dell does not recommend changing or remapping the Microsoft Copilot key function.

If you choose to proceed with changing or remapping this key, please be aware that Dell will not provide support for this modification.

if you press CoPilot button in remapping tool like Powertoys Keyboard manager, the copilot key is  actually a combination of Win+Shift+F23

You can remap shortcut Win+Shift+F23 to Ctrl if you want.

After remapping Copilot to Ctrl, will Shift+Copilot produce Shift+Ctrl?  Or does it produce just Ctrl?

I'm hoping to find an answer this too. I've never heard of a keyboard without a right Ctrl key and not sure how to get along without it. I have no need for copilot.

I tried Power Toys first but the key did nothing under some circumstances and brought up the Contacts menu in Outlook.  There are discussion threads that say you have to use the remap shortcut feature of Power Toys, but that doesn't seem to work for everyone.

A Dell CSR spent two hours trying to fix this and gave up, telling me it was beyond Dell customer support's expertise.  All he did was remap the key in the registry, which is what I already tried with Power Toys (in a lot less time).

I'm giving up and returning the machine.  I spoke with Sales and they pointed me to an XPS 15 9530 (I wanted a 14" not a 15") and the G-Series laptops (didn't want a brick).  He also pointed me to an Inspiron 15 3530 with 16 Gig (cannot get it with 32), which looks like left-over product they don't make anymore.

So I'm going to buy an HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 Laptop 14t-eu000.

remapping the right crl button to something that a vendor wants to push is insane.
very annoying not to have the right ctrl button.

btw . - I have the HP spectre as well .. .. can highly recommend it. :-)    .
without hte copilot button the Dell would win though

Ended up buying a latitude 5340, last year's model, before Microsoft enforced this copilot insanity on manufacturers.

@DELL-Nat M I am a blind computer user who has used Dell computers since 2006. Since I cannot use a mouse, I used the control keys frequently to accomplish work quickly and efficiently. I just bought this Inspiron 1610 and had no idea this change had been made. Is there some way I can get some assistance? I need to use the right control frequently. Please know that I teach other blind individuals how to use the computer with assistive technology and have recommended Dell to all of them. If this cannot be remedied, I will stop recommending this product. This is untennable and causes tremendous inconvenience.

I am willing to be part of the solution, if possible.<Private data removed from public view. DELL-Admin>

By the way, I am a retired accessibility consultant and am willing to asisst with this if possible.

Made an account just to vent my frustration with the copilot key. It's unacceptable that the bios does not allow this to be changed back to a proper key. I will never buy a machine again if it has this copilot key hack.

@DELL-Nat M  So, the Dell accepted solution to this problem is to just not solve it in any way? Great help here.

I have attempted to solve this problem with both PowerToys and SharpKeys. And at least on my new Dell Inspiron, these approaches do not work. After a day with ChatGPT, I was able to get a "mostly works" fix with a script in AutoHotKey. This key is so deep in the OS that it is VERY difficult to remap, and even the basic re-mapping of the copilot key to a ctrl key in autohotkey resulted in it acting like ctrl-shift instead of just ctrl.  So, this approach redefines the *combination* of the copilot key + [other key] to the ctrl + [other key] as desired. But each combination has to be mapped specifically.

On my computer at least, the copilot key scancode is SC06E. Then the script looks like:
----

----

As you can see, you need to define all the ctrl+[fcn] combos you want to use, such as left & right arrow, up & down arrows, ctrl-V, ctrl-C, ctrl-X, ctrl-Z, etc. Sorry, I couldn't paste the code in here without it being interpreted and screwing it up. Hence, you get the screeshot.

Also, this does not provide a way to address the need for 3 button combos, e.g. ctrl+shift+right arrow. For that, I will have to rely on the left ctrl button. But at least I've got the rest of it. Hope this helps others!

@Xenon54 This does not work on my Dell Inspiron (2025). I could only disable the copilot button, but it would not reassign.

I've had the key remapped and working well as a control key for about a year on my XPS-14. I would have returned the laptop otherwise.
