XPS 15 9500 REBOOT - CHARGE ISSUES THREAD

I would like to open a single thread for the endless series of issues affecting the Dell XPS 15 9500.

There are countless posts across various forums, so for convenience, I’d like to gather everything in one place, hoping it might be useful.

Here, I want to collect all updated, valid, and tested information that can help resolve the charging failure and random reboots of the laptop. Only reliable information—I'd like to avoid suggestions like "try this," "I did this, and it worked for a month," etc.

We’re talking about a €3000 laptop (at least in Italy) that must work.
We already know that Dell's motherboard replacement has not solved the issue.

So far, I haven’t found any official information or explanations from Dell.

Below are some links to the many discussions on the topic—there are certainly more.

For hardware, there are only 3 parts to check when your XPS 9500 has charging issue:  power adapter, charging ports, and charging circuits (motherboard).

If the issue was not resolved after you replaced your motherboard, the only part left to replace is power adapter.  All of charging port and charging circuits are on the motherboard and very unlikely that all the USB-C ports failed at the same time.

Here is a genuine OEM power adapter compatible with your system  https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-130w-usb-c-gan-slim-adapter/apd/492-bdpb/pc-accessories

The following components have already been replaced by various users:

  • Motherboards
  • Power supplies
  • Cables
  • Batteries

Despite this, no definitive and long-lasting solutions have been found. I myself, after two months of apparent functionality, started experiencing issues again last week with the exact same hardware as two months ago.

This is user to user base community forum whereas users can post their computers issue, problem and other users with PC knowledge can post their inputs, suggestions in hope to resolve the issue, problem.

Am one of users with some knowledge and volunteer my free time to help out others in this community.  It seems that you have an XPS 9500 and your post title with charging issue.

I thought my response was genuinely helpful when pointed out the power issue and pointed you to correct direction for resolution.  Not sure why you replied with sarcasm with some attitude tones.  Read your post and ask yourself this, would you help someone if they ask for help in the same manner and language as in your post?

Besides the indication of your €3000 laptop is a Dell XPS 9500, there was no other specific information beside charging issue and a handful of random posts.  Your definition of generic is way off when comparing to my specific response.

Logically, there are only two reasons causing the issue, hardware and software (firmware).  Not everyone will have their computers settings or setup the same.  That was the reason I had no suggestion regarding software or firmware.  Besides the info of motherboard replacement did not fix the issue, there was absolutely nothing else provided in your post.

If you genuinely need help, be specific with information and asking with manner.  Maybe someone with time and patient will read all those linked posts and help you further.  As for myself, I'll stop after this response post.  Therefore, there is no need to reply to my post.

I repeat

read all the other posts and the dozens and dozens of attempts made by me and many other users. I believe that anything you can recommend has already been tried. We have been trying to solve these problems for years and the last thing I want to hear is "replace the power supply"

all the necessary information (hardware, bios, etc etc etc) is already in the numerous linked posts that are not at all "random" as you say.

that said, thanks for the help

Thanks, @Fabrizio_xps! I completely agree with your request. There’s still no solution, and it doesn’t seem like Dell is aware of the problem. Generic advice is just SPAM at this point. We need a real solution.

PS: I don't understand why Dell isn't reacting. Can't this somehow be patched? The company should be aware that this is massively damaging to its reputation when so many XPS 15 9500 users (and possibly also 9520 + others) have this problem. Users who hear about this might decide not to trust Dell over other companies. This problem has existed for such a long time! Why is there no statement or any effective effort to address it?

I used to have the same problem from my thread:

https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/xps/xps-9500-reboot-constantly-and-not-charging/647fa091f4ccf8a8de59b2ed?page=1

I had done the OS reinstalled and tons of tries with the Dell tech support, and ended up Dell replaced the motherboard.  Passed few months after the motherboard replacement, the issue was occurred again.

Since I have an addition docking station (WD19S), and I connect my 9500 with the dock.  It works since.... no issue for the random reboot and no charge.

I have migrated it from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and it is still okay.

@houming thanks for your help.

In my search for posts regarding the restart / charging issue, I hadn't seen yours, which I just read. Once again, I find it absurd that Dell decides to completely ignore the issue. Really absurd.

So you confirm that using the Dell Dock - WD19S 130 W, you're not experiencing restart issues? Do you connect everything to the dock? (external monitor, charging cable, LAN cable, etc?)

In your thread, I read that the user @serralath  says, 'I tried using the original Dell Docking station. Didn't help.'
Are we talking about the same docking station, in your opinion?

Thanks

Indeed, 9550 was EOL, but it is a good laptop in my opinion.

Sorry, it is WD19TB (very old model, power delivery 130W with Thunderbolt 3) and the compatibility list is at:

https://www.delltechnologies.com/asset/en-us/products/electronics-and-accessories/technical-support/dell_docking_compatibility_guide.pdf

There is WD19TB hardware spec:

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/dell-wd19tb-dock/WD19_TB_UserGuide/docking-specifications?guid=guid-cd615eef-5015-4931-bf9b-e19f9cf50c4d&lang=en-us

I do have the external TB SSD, the external USB keyboard/mouse, the external speakers (my TB has the audio port).  Yes, I have LAN sometimes if I need the dedicate internet speed. Dump all external stuff onto the WD19TB.

Yes, I am no longer having the random restart or the charging issue for a year.

I am not sure the user @serralath docking station model, and never mentioned the model in the post.  So, it is hard to tell how to test it.

I tried WD19TB was an accident since the charging issue occurred again after the motherboard replacement. (maybe the power delivery issue from the original 130W power adapter, I guess).

I am not sure the conditions that your 9500 is in. Will WD19xx/22xx help because these docking stations are not cheap, especially the charging with Thunderbolt port.

In addition:

"WD19S 130W", it is only 90W power delivery, and "WD19S 180W" and "WD22TB" are both 130W power delivery.

Hope I answer all questions.

@houming thanks for the help! But does this basically mean that you can't use your laptop on battery mode? What happens if you're working on a train and can't connect your docking station between the charger and your laptop?

Hi,

No problem.

Yes, I can use it with the battery mode (which never has an issue to me).  When plugged with the 130 power adapter (that was the issue happened) and it will get me an alter for not to use my 9500 under the heavy load as possible.

I guess (I do not have an proof) that my 9500 connected with docking has the enough power delivery.

My own thread, a user mentioned that the user disabled sleep and hibernate may help. And, I guess that disabling the power management maybe help either.

Neither of the two options (disabling hibernate and sleep) helps, nor does anything else I’ve tried. I also encounter the biggest issues while using battery power, such as the charger not being recognized when plugged in and occasional crashes, especially at the start of a session, and almost always during boot or reboot. Interestingly, disabling Intel UHD (as suggested in another thread) sometimes seems to help a bit, but it doesn't resolve the issue at all. What a poorly designed system this is. I’m really frustrated, especially given how much I paid for it and what I expected from Dell, once known as the kings of solid systems. Apologies @Fabrizio_xps for this non-constructive post again.

(see also https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/xps/dell-xps-9500-sometimes-does-not-charge/67d8f491457e32024df4649f, there I posted the most interesting answer I read so far, however, still not solving the issue)
