XPS 15 9510 - Battery

I bought yesterday a brand new Dell XPS 15 9510. i9, 32GB RAM, OLED monitor.

It looks great, the performance is solid, but the battery is horrible. I got the laptop because I was reading in the reviews about 8 hours of battery life. This is what Dell was claiming also on their website, 8 hours of 4K streaming...

However, I roughly get 2 hours when doing nothing but just web-surfing... I contacted Dell support and they told me that for the 86Wh battery, 2-4 hours is normal. Is it? I am seriously thinking of returning it, they cannot be advertising 8 hours and then hardly achieve 3....

I'm glad you posted this. I'm getting exactly the same and got the same reply from Dell which isn't really acceptable. It's not an issue with the battery but with the idle power being 20-25W when web browsing. I'm guessing that this is partially related to the i9 processor and also the 32gb ram.

Still... it seems too high considering the i7 16gb version tested in the reviews idles around 8-12W and lasted 6-8 hours. So I'm not sure whats going on.

I'm keeping the laptop as I love the screen and build too much and got a good deal. But like you... I'm not happy!

I have the 9510 i9 config with 32 GB of RAM and OLED display. I have used it on battery for 3 hours for photoshop editing tasks and still have 50% of battery remaining. I run the display set at 55 which gives me the correct 100 cd/m2 brightness for photo editing. That battery life for a powerful machine with 15 inch high res screen is good for me.

I had the same problem out of the box, bad battery life with 2 hours.

After an hard reset and clean installation of Windows 11, i solved it completely.

Now i can easily run 4.5 hours. It's not crazy, but acceptable.

Thank you for this. I uninstalled so many apps and tried everything, and it only gave me 30m-1hr extra battery. I was ready to give up and return my XPS. I saw your comment and thought why not... And it worked! I could only do 3.5hrs at most, after disabling as much as I could, running at at the very minimum.

With Clean Istallation, I run 5hrs with Netflix and 12hrs idling. Thank g*d!

It must have been Dell's installation system that was at fault, rather than hardware.

I have same machine as OP: Dell XPS 15 9510, i9, 32GB RAM, OLED (Windows 11).

For those that are wondering, I did Clean Installation of Windows 11 via Cloud.

Could you elaborate on your process? how did you reinstall and which options did you choose? Thanks in advance!

I more or less followed the instructions similair to the process listed on this site: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-reinstall-or-reset-windows-10-via-the-cloud

If there are options where it asks to keep files or remove everything, I selected remove everything. I also selected to not install Dell OEM. I did it as clean as possible. Afterwards I did not change default settings. Even when im populating my laptop, I only did  it one by one as to check if my battery life changed, I have disabled all startup apps.

I also have an update on my own battery life - I previously said "5hrs with Netflix and 12hrs idling"
But over a few days I've recroded the battery life and the average is much higher. On average I get 9hrs on Netflix app, 14hrs browsing and 20+ idling.

If you chat with Dell and they say 3-4hrs is normal, they are lying.

Hey there

Just wanting to get back to this and ask a few questions:
First of all, youre saying that you did a reinstall via the cloud. Is that the option you can choose under the Windows Update Tab in the settings and then "Advanced Settings -> Reset -> Reset this PC".

Also, how did you choose that you dont install the Dell OEM? I would also like to do that, because i guess all of the dell stuff would be on the PC aswell if i reinstalled it through that.

Last question, which drivers did you reinstall and how did you do that? Did you do it through this link ? I was thinking about just downloading the drivers listed as "urgent" and the Premiere Color one.

Im kind of unsure before all of this and i just want to make sure, that everything works in the end. Thanks for helping

Hi there!

I’m Debasis from the Dell Social Media team. May I know if there is anything else that I can help with the reported issue.

check out my post about the same machine with similar problems.  I fixed it by shutting down a utility that monitored the GPU.  Went from ~2.5 hours to >7 hours.  That’s with the GPU enabled

@StZill it is nice that you were able to fix it by disabling Hardware Monitor. The problem about that is: me and probably a few other people dont even have that programm installed. I cant be able to disable it without actually having it. Dont know how it could work for me but the problem isnt getting solved with that. I still need to reset windows and try that but its a real shame this doesnt work properly.

There are several other programs that cause the same issue as Open Hardware Monitor.  What they all have in common is they monitor what is happening with the GPU in real time and in doing so greatly increase the battery discharge rate.  I mentioned this to you and others who have had this trouble because of the possibility of a fix if you are using any of these programs.  If you are not, then it won't help and I wish you success in finding a different solution to your battery issue.
