XPS 15 9520, ghost click problem
XPS 15 9520
I just purchased the Dell XPS 15 and right out of the box noticed a very bizarre "Ghost Clicking" issue. When the touchscreen is enabled the computer will randomly "click" various places on the screen with a mind of its own.
Usually it clicks in about the same place because it usually clicks the same bookmark in my browser, but the issue happens in every application.
When I disable the touchscreen the problem goes away and what is very weird is that the issue specifically seems to only happen with the touchscreen enabled when the computer is on the charging stand . . . When I lay it down flat on my desk (not on the charging stand) and use the keyboard and mouse, the issue doesn't seem to happen.
Any ideas Dell engineers? I have already spoken with support. I have updated my drivers, the OS, the BIOS, and even installed a "touch screen patch" that I was very hopeful would solve the problem, but nothing has worked!
Please help!

@DELL-Nat M The cause is typically the power supply. I discovered this myself and confirmed it with many users on Reddit. Many non-Dell power supplies have noisy current, and the touch screen has poor electrical isolation (which we consider a design flaw), but altogether, the touch screen flips out if the power is dirty in any way.
You must either use a Dell adapter, or one of many 100W USB-C supplies, or batteries or a power station, all of which emit clean power. The bad adapters on Amazon look like Dell adapters, but are actually knock-offs, and have very poor circuitry.

Disable palm rejection: If the touchpad is registering your palm as a touch, you can disable palm rejection in the touchpad settings.
Check the touchpad settings: Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. Right-click on your computer and select "Mouse Settings". In the Touchpad section, check for any settings related to touch and gestures that may be causing the issue.
Update touchpad drivers: Make sure you have the latest touchpad drivers installed from the Dell website.
Disable touch screen: If the issue only occurs when the touch screen is enabled, you can try disabling it to see if the issue goes away.
Reinstall Windows: If the issue persists, you can try reinstalling Windows to see if it resolves the issue.

Hi!
I also have the XPS 9520, and first noticed this a couple of weeks ago. It has worked fine since september of last year, but i think the ghost touches started after a driver update. I think it was the last Nvidia driver, but havent found any other posts about this until now. Maybe it has corrupted the HID driver for the touch screen..? I hope there will be a fix for this soon, because for now the only fix has been to diable the touch driver (HID touch screen) completely.
Fingers crossed they can fix this with a software update soon, and that it's not a hardware issue...

I am having the same issue. I can literally see dots appear on my screen as if someone is touching it when I am nowhere near the computer. I am already on my 5th keyboard/track-pad for my XPS15....
My machine is an XPS 15 9570

I am also having this problem. The 1st response I saw above says its our palm touching the touch pad but I always have my touch pad disbled because of the constant accidental touch (I don't like touch pads anyway if I don't HAVE to use them). HEY DELL, what's up with this issue? These are not cheap machines! I have just found how to disable the touch feature on my screen and the issue disapeared as soon as I disabled the touch feature!!! I just installed the latest drivers & updates today, restarted but the problem persisted until I disabled the touch feature of the screen!!!

Hi,
I am having the exact same issue. It is quite frustrating, as others mentioned these machines are really not cheap and when I opt to go for a touchscreen I also want to be able to use it.. I had it deactivated for a few months now and decided to try and turn it back on (also checked for newer drivers, but couldn't find any) aaaand of course the issue immediately came back.
Would be very appreciated to get some input from Dell on this.

@DELL-Jesse L No, this information does not help resolve the issue. I tried all of it, yes, even re-installing windows. The only thing that helps is disabling the touchscreen, but as this is an inherent function that we paid for (~ +300€ compared to the non-touch screen!), this can not be a permanent solution.

I am having the same issue. XPS 9720, just out of warranty period. Any response at all from Dell outside of the standard runaround? I have also had to disable the touch screen driver to “fix” this issue, otherwise the computer would be completely unusable. This is sounding like a hardware issue, like a bad connection in a cable or screen conductors. It’s also starting to sound like a class action…

I have the XPS 15 9520, and I am having the same Ghost clicking issues on the right third of the screen when the touchscreen is enabled. I agree with the users above, this is a feature we paid for and disabling the touchscreen is not an option. Yes, it sounds like a hardware defect on the screens. And I agree we can start a petition here if needed.

Just here to raise my hand too. My XPS 15 9500 has had the same issue for a long time. Started about 1 year after purchase. Never dropped/damaged/etc. Just started. I don't know if it coincided with an update or not. It was happening occasionally for a long time before I realized what was going on and just got progressively worse. I have touch disabled. Also, on a likely unrelated note, my track pad is erratic and registers touch when my palm rests on the edge of the machine (at least 0.25" away from the trackpad). As well as going from too sensitive to not sensitive enough. With touch screen off and a bluetooth mouse, i can work well. Otherwise, there's a lot of "accidental" clicking. Sure could use a fix, it has substantially limited my productivity, etc.
It's disheartening to see that newer models than mine also have this issue.
