XPS 15 9550 Bulging Trackpad

Hi all, I've had my XPS 15 9550 for a couple years now and the trackpad has been experiencing a severe bulging effect, to the point where it is physically unclickable (its touch and tap functions still fully work though). I suspect the battery has swelled significantly, which is what may be causing this. My warranty has long expired, so I am wondering how I can self-repair this issue. I am willing to buy a new trackpad and battery provided they are reasonably priced. A couple photos below to illustrate how bad it has gotten:

First of all remove the battery asap as it can not only damage your laptop beyond repair but it is also unsafe. Removing the battery is fairly easy and the directions can be found here. And you can purchase a genuine OEM Dell battery here.

Once you've removed the battery, see if the touchpad works. You might get away with just a new battery.

Be sure to dispose of the damaged battery properly. It really is a hazard.

Hey Dell, this is also happening to my XPS 15 9550. If this is a major safety issue, why aren't you recalling these laptops? I need to know this laptop is not going to explode on me when I try to remove the battery or be worried that it is going to burn my house down!

I just called in to dell support and related my concerns, and the girl hung up on me when I told her I was concerned about safety.

Please contact me asap to let me know how to handle this. This was a $2000 laptop when I bought it, and I don't feel like I should be trashing it after only three years!!!

Had exactly the same bulging Battery problem with my old (and now retired and replaced with XPS 15) Prestige.

If you're worried about removing the battery, take the system to the nearest reputable repair shop.  Otherwise, remove and dispose of the battery immediately.
