XPS 15 9570 USB C Charging Not Working - Another Fried Charging Circuitry Chip

Hello all,

My XPS 15 9570 recently stopped accepting a charge from any and all USB C chargers. I have tried 4 separate USB C chargers and all will not charge the laptop. I have a CalDigit TS3+ Dock, a Dell TB16 240W Dock, and two separate USB C Chargers. All are fully functional with a separate laptop. My XPS 15, the TB16 Dock, and CalDigit TS3+ dock are all updated to the latest firmware, bios, etc.

After stumbling upon two separate threads, one on Dell's own support forum and one on Reddit, I noticed many people reporting the same issue. Some of these people have opened their laptop, and it appears that the same motherboard component has failed.

See page 7 of dell forum post for images of failed component: https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/XPS-15-9570-TB16-USB-Type-C-no-longer-charging/td-p/7317594/page/7

https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/co842t/xps_9570_burned_chip_does_not_charge_with_usbc/

I am writing to report that, after opening my laptop, it appears that the same component has failed. There is a burnt portion of plastic cover over the motherboard near the charging circuitry and underneath is the same component reported to have failed in previous threads.

For any others experiencing the same issue. You can still charge the laptop using a docking station as long as you also have the 130W Barrel AC Adapter/Charger. You have to plug the barrel AC Adapter in first, then connect the dock. If you connect the USB C dock before connecting the barrel AC adapter, it will not charge.

I am largely reporting this issue in the hopes that it reaches Dell engineers, who hopefully can revise the motherboard design on future laptops to prevent issues like this. This is my second Dell XPS laptop to fail in the past 2 years and likely the last Dell computer I will ever purchase. My XPS 15 is out of warranty at the moment, so I am not sure whether it is worth paying for an out-of-warranty repair. I am very frustrated with Dell and the lack of build quality.

Same issue on my XPS 9570.... Is it possible to know the PN of the motherboard or the name of IC to try to replace it ?

The schematics are out there, usually for purchase rather than for free.  The issue will be in sourcing the component(s) needed, which may not be easy if you live anywhere other than Southeast China.  You'll also need access to a hot air rework station.  Coupled with the fact that it may be that some other component has failed, causing the visible one and you have the reason why very few repair shops will tackle board level repairs for mainboards.
