XPS 17 3060 VR compatibility

@cberinger  I believe I remember reading that the XPS 17 9710 has the same option. On the 9700, it required an NVIDIA RTX GPU, not a GTX GPU. On the 9710, both of the NVIDIA GPUs are RTX GPUs, and I don’t know if that means this option is available with both GPUs, but if you’re planning to buy the higher-end option anyway, then that shouldn’t matter (unless you’d want the lower-end option to save cost if it had this BIOS option).

Also note that this option is NOT required for Oculus Link VR, since that method doesn’t send a native video signal to the Quest. It instead sends a basic USB data signal, and therefore it can work even on systems where the Intel GPU controls the display outputs. But if you plan to use a VR headset that requires a native HDMI or DisplayPort signal, you will need a system where the dGPU can have direct control of the outputs.

Hi jphughan, thanks a lot for your input. I also read your response concerning the 9700 with the RTX 2060.

We are using a Valve Index (DP) and I hope that the 9700 BIOS "native" option is also available in the 9710.

As it looks now, it may work as it will be an RTX as you wrote, but I need a definitive answer. Perhaps I need to contact Dell Support directly to be 100% sure - or do you possibly have some reference link to provide?

@cberinger  I was about to reply only to say that relying on Dell Support to provide reliably accurate answers to technical questions like this is….not ideal. But then I did some digging and found this PDF. On Page 4, there’s a note that on systems with a 3060, you’ll have the “Direct Graphics Controller Direct Output Mode” BIOS option. (I really think that first “Direct” should have been “Discrete”, but oh well…). So it looks like you’re good to go.
