XPS 9550: great hardware, terrible software support

Dear all,

after 2 years with this machine, before the new Windows major update will be released and a new series of incompatibilities, BSODs, stuff that will not work as design, and at the end of the April Update cycle I can declare the following, without disputes, proved by the fact:

the development, the testing and the final performances of ALL of the software coming from the Dell support page specific for my/your machine, from the smallest driver to the BIOS, are TERRIBLE, if not catastrophic is some cases.

  • Think 4 times before go for a BIOS update. You THINK you can always downgrade, but not all of the firmware you modify with the BIOS utility allows a downgrade, and this make impossible to establish if something is working not properly.
  • After 7 BIOS updates over the years, the "wake on wlan" is still not working properly, or causes a lot of side effects in "synergy" with the Killer wifi driver.
  • On the superuber performances of the Killer 1535 wifi there is a wide documentation on internet, so wide that people is actually buying an intel chip together with the new machine. Let's be fair, in my case wifi was really stable and WOL was working without much troubles...of course at half the speed of my iPad. When you see a device 4 times cheaper than your PC going 2 times faster, with Dell/Killer declaring superior performances, well you know an intel chip will be bought. I spent 2 weeks in close contact with Killer support to figure out the problem, no solutions was found except, guess what, "it should be a BIOS problem"...you don't say!!
  • The audio driver issue (cracking, popping) with YouTube is as old as this machine and STILL. NOT. FIXED. You start your machine today and no problem, you start it tomorrow and crack pop crack crrrrr. I turned back to the Microsoft built-in drivers.
  • Don't try to use suspension and/or hibernate. Dell does not test drivers enough and you will face any sort of problems when you wake up the machine from these statuses. I use my XPS as desktop replacement, but I can see the pain of people trying to use it as a notebook, they close the lid, reopen it and find a nice black screen and a frozen machine.
  • The fastest, more reliable solution was in 90% of the cases using Microsoft drivers and clean Windows installations, in the other 10% was using drivers directly from the company producing the single components.
  • Golden rule: if it works, don't fix it.  Security concerns are important, but Dell is starting to make them secondary if I risk to make my machine unstable every time I touch it.
  • With the Windows 10 new update policy, this situation will be more difficult over the years. 1 new XPS 15 configuration every year and 2 major updates per year look to much to be handled properly by present Dell company. And if the machine is still unstable with the old release when the new one pops out, we are doomed.

Sorry for this rant, I love this machine when it works as much as I hate to see it crippled by bad software.
